When you are bored and stuck in the Vacaville jail, you scratch your name on the door so that almost 60 years later, you are being remembered. The jail cell has a lot of interesting scratches on the walls and ceilings.

A Thank You to David Trojan, one of our volunteers, who is also an Airplane Archaeologist who searches for lost airplanes and writes reports on what he finds. He came in last week and donated money to us in Memory of Jerry Bowen, who was with us for almost thirty years till his untimely passing, last June. David requested the donation be used for something that Jerry would have approved of, and knowing that Jerry loved modern technology, and how it helps us digitize history ...Continue reading

I wanted to give a Thank you to Kim Fu of the Vacaville Reporter for placing monthly historical articles from us into the newspaper. Our first article on Elmira, was warmly received, as was our next article on the Vaca Valley Railroad. Today, our article on Basic Vegetable appeared in the Sunday paper and we hope that these monthly articles will help grow your interest in our local history. ... While we are still closed to the public due to the Covid-19, some of our staff still come in and do research from requests, create articles for the newspaper, digitize existing collections, digitize microfilm from the reporter and create storage where storage did not exist. While doing storage manipulations, we have come across a number of different "media" types, cassettes, VHS; CD and DVD's and even reel to reel tapes, which brings me to make this odd request. We do have a large reel to reel tape player/recorder for the larger spools of tape, but, we are in need of a working "portable" reel to reel tape player/recorder. These would be the portable type with the smaller separate reels, that I used to have in the mid to late sixties and early seventies. In order to be able to play these smaller reels, we would like to come across a reasonably priced, or a donated portable reel to reel tape player/recorder that works. We would then hook them up to more "modern" units so that we can digitize what are on these tapes before they go bad. In the event we are to locate a working unit, we would transfer the info on the tapes to a CD or DVD disc that is apparently guaranteed for 100 years. We have bought these 100 year discs and are busy transferring the CD/DVD's we currently have onto these new discs before the original discs go bad. While we are not open to the public, I still go in on our normal "open" hours and usually stay later than our scheduled hours. Our Tuesday/Thursday hours are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and for those that cannot make these times, we have the same time frame every third Saturday of the month. Being semi-retired, I am available for appointments, if the time frames above do not work for you. I am very much enjoying the "Vaca History" page on Facebook and have placed contact information and subject matter for those of you that post, as I would like to contact you to see if you are willing to share the history that you have posted, and history that you have not posted and may have of Vacaville that we'd be able to digitize. If you pop by, and see someone in there, (more than likely me, Doug), I will be happy to discuss the possibility of digitizing your local history that you may have. In the meantime, keep searching for local history, hopefully post it, and also hopefully, you may find a working portable reel to reel tape player/recorder you no longer are using or need and would make that available to us at either a reasonable cost or a donation. Thank you for your time. doug

Hello, just to let you know that Vasquez Deli who is very community oriented, has created a fundraiser for the LNU Fire Victims. For a $5.00 donation you can choose between an adult or child bracelet. When going in for lunch pickup, how about helping the fire victims by supporting this worthy cause. The Vacaville Heritage Council would like to give a big THANK YOU to a couple of locals who recently have aided us in preserving history. The first one goes to Cathy Santopadre; who read on another Facebook page that I wish we'd been able to take pictures of the "Buck" bridge that was being taken out to be replaced. She answered by stating in May of 2020; she went out and took numerous pictures of the bridge for her own memories. She read my post about the wish for pics and ...she made those available to us. THANK YOU Cathy for preserving the past for us, and also your compassion for history will allow us to share that with others into the future. The second person I'd like to Thank, is Jason Welling, Lead Maintenance Worker for the City of Vacaville. A couple of weeks ago, he stopped by the Old Town Hall and I was in, digitizing some history. He informed me that he had asked the contractor to "cut" out the two markers (dates etched in the bridge) as they were historical, and he would like to preserve them. The contractor, obviously also a history buff, did as he requested at no extra charge. Jason took a couple of pics, showed them to me and asked if we'd like to have one of them? Of course, my answer was yes. He stated he would have to ask the city if we could have one and he would bring it in to us if he received permission. Last Thursday, Jason and a co-worker, I apologize that I forgot his co-workers name, brought in the smaller marker and donated it to us. It sits proudly in front of our display cabinet, this 200-250 lb marker. We will research this bridge, and affix a card to it about its history, so that once we re-open, the public can see and read its history. To top it off, Jason stated that normally when something is going to be replaced, refurbished or removed within the city, he hears about it, and he stated if the above affects something he feels is historic to Vacaville, he will alert me so that we can go and take pictures of what is there before it isn't any longer. The Vacaville Heritage Council thanks both Cathy and Jason for their compassion of preserving history. We are all the better for it. So, I am asking the public, if you see or hear of some changes to something historical in Solano County, grab some pictures of it before it happens, and/or contact us at the Vacaville Heritage Council and let us know what is going on so that we may go out and take pictures, or in extreme cases, chain ourselves to it to preserve it. Stay safe and healthy. doug

Hello, just wanted to let everyone know that even though we are closed to the public, some of us are still coming in to preserve history. We are installing shelving for storage that we did not have before so that we can get things off the floor and out from under the desks and tidy up our front office so that when we are allowed to open, we hope to be far more presentable. We are still available by email; and voice mail if you have a historical question that we may be able t...o help you with. We have set up our new Large Book Scanner and have moved two of our smaller scanners into another location so that we can scan more efficiently depending on the size of the material that we are scanning. We can now digitize microfilm; documents; photos; negatives; yearbooks; Atlases; and soon even reel to reel tapes. We have a new CD/DVD duplicator that will allow us to burn onto 100 year storage discs information from current CD/DVD's that are getting to the end of their "life span." Can I ask each of you a favor? While we all are currently limited to mass gatherings, would you be interested in sharing your local (Solano County) history for others by allowing us to digitize photos and documents that you may have in photo albums, safe's; etc? Another favor? Does anyone have some pictures and/or information of the "Moose Lodge Pool" that was on Butcher Road? We have six pictures of it, but no information as to who built it, when, and when it was razed. Perhaps you have some interesting stories of things that happened there that you'd like to share. Thank you, and please stay healthy to you and yours. doug

Unfortunately, we are still closed with no open date as of yet. I have been coming in for the last 3 1/2 months and taking advantage of this shutdown to continue to digitize history, and also to create some much needed storage. Our Techie, Brian, also comes in when he can to keep our scanners, computers, software up and running and is creating a new website for us that will have new information on it for you. More on that later as we progress. Right now, I'd be embarassed to...Continue reading
