Union Station Homeless Services 06.01.2021

We are saddened by the loss of All Saints Church rector emeritus George Regas, who was a driving force of social change in Pasadena and the community, including the founding of Union Station Homeless Services in 1973. "There are very few places like Union Station anywhere," Regas has said. "We are made to be givers, we are made to be compassionate." Regas has been praised for his bold leadership that advanced civil rights, women’s ordination, LGBTQ marriage equality, and reve...rsing the arms race. As we reflect on the highs and lows of this year, we're continuously reminded of the importance of meeting the need, meeting the moment and meeting people where they are. This year has been all about adapting to ever-changing landscapes and protocols to best serve our community. It has been about Union Station's volunteers, donors and staff being beacons of hope for those in need. The year 2020 is coming to an end in a few hours and we are so close to meeting our goal of 1,00...0 Beacons of Hope! We need our final 100 Beacons of Hope -- 100 gifts from 100 donors -- before the clock strikes midnight. Will you be a Beacon of Hope and help make the future brighter for those we serve? A gift of any size can make a tremendous impact in someone's life. https://unionstationhs.org/be-one-of-our-thousand-beacons-/

There are three days left to become a Beacon of Hope for those in need in our community. We still need 380 gifts from 380 donors by December 31st to meet our goal. Make a gift today at: https://unionstationhs.org/be-one-of-our-thousand-beacons-/ If you're wondering how our organization has continued to serve the community this year, please read this message from our CEO, Anne Miskey:... At Union Station, we’ve had to keep going. We’re essential workers. People don’t stop being homeless, especially in a pandemic. If anything, it’s made the situation worse. We continue to serve people, do outreach in encampments and under bridges, and offer medical services to people living in tents. What your support means to us is that we can continue to help others to get the help they are looking for, to get housing and to get to a position where they are not only stable, but able to fulfill their dreams just like all of us want to. You have the power to be a source of hope for 1,000 individuals in the San Gabriel Valley experiencing homeless in these difficult times. Your generous gift by December 31st can change a life: https://unionstationhs.org/be-one-of-our-thousand-beacons-/

October is #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth and we want to shed light on this important issue. Did you know that more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the US will experience domestic violence by an intimate partner? When victims flee these dangerous environments, they are forced to leave their homes with nowhere else to turn. How can you help? Tell those experiencing homelessness about our programs (https://unionstationhs.org/impact/our-programs/) and get more involved by donating or volunteering at (https://unionstationhs.org/help/)

For most people, especially our team at Union Station, food equals love. As a thank-you to USHS staff for all their hard work during this pandemic, our Board of Directors teamed up with Latino Restaurant Association's Pasadena Food Hug program to raise funds and give every team member a $25 gift card for a meal at a minority-owned Pasadena restaurant! A celebratory drive-thru was held for staff, complete with balloons, posters and cheering. Joining the celebration were Board ...Chair Kevin Trieber, Board Members Marie Queen and Lonnie Schield, CEO Anne Miskey and members of the Innovations and Excellence Steering Committee (IESC), a staff-driven committee that looks to uphold the vision, mission and values of the organization. Pasadena Food Hug was created in partnership with the Latino Restaurant Association with the vision to deliver hope and comfort to front line heroes, including healthcare workers, first responders, nonprofit workers, grocery workers, bus drivers, delivery people, and others -- who are all working to keep us going during the pandemic. To donate and support others on the front lines, visit: www.latinorestaurantassociation.org/pfh
