October 21, 2020 Memo re current P/NP status at USC From: USC Dornsife Office of Pre-Health Advisement To: Pre-Health Students The University administration has generously changed the date of changing your grade from a letter grade to a P/NP grade to November 13th, the last day of classes.... Many of you have questions about how that will affect the standing of your applications to professional schools. Before the Covid-19 crisis began, professional schools generally would not accept a Pass grade taken in any of the usual pre-health required courses: Bisc 120 or 220; Chem 105a or 105b; Chem 322a or 322b etc. In the spring 2020 semester, after the onset of Covid-19, some universities in the country mandated that all courses in that semester be taken as P/NP. This helped those pre-health students who were struggling with their rigorous core sciences but hurt those who were excelling in those courses. At USC, however, the administration allowed students to choose either a letter grade or P/NP after they had received their semester grades. In addition, the California allopathic (MD) schools of medicine said that they would not penalize those applying students who chose P/NP in their sciences. This policy ended after the spring semester. At this time, because each professional school has its own policy concerning their willingness to accept P/NP for current pre-health required courses, it is not possible for us to know what position each individual school will take concerning students who take the P/NP option this current semester. Therefore, we are recommending that students base their decision to take a required pre-health course, as P/NP, on the pre-Covid-19 (before Covid-19) position of professional schools which states that they will not accept those courses as P/NP. If they have any questions concerning the policy of any particular professional school, then they should contact that school themselves and inquire about that school’s policy concerning P/NP grades in required courses. For those coming to USC as spring admits or transfer students whose current universities mandate P/NP, then the decision is out of your hands and, in general, professional schools will understand this and will not penalize students for something which is out of their control. We hope this has been helpful to you in making a decision concerning the P/NP policy. USC Dornsife Office of Pre-Health Advisement See more

Hello! Violence Intervention Volunteers (VIV), a student organization, is hosting a FAB-BOO-LOUS Hygiene Kit Drive from Monday 10/26 - Monday 11/2 to support the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) in Los Angeles. As a part of their comprehensive model of care, VIP is committed to supporting families in crisis. By donating essential hygiene items (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, laundry soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes), you can help VIP provide the much needed physical... and emotional support these families need. If you are able to contribute, there are three ways to get involved: 1. Donate items directly to VIP via an Amazon Link! (https://a.co/2ylz8tD). Clicking on this link will take you directly to an Amazon wish list of items for clients. Add any item you wish to donate to your cart and proceed to checkout. When you go to shipping, manually select Violence Intervention Program’s Gift Registry Address and select use this address to send items directly to VIP! 2. Donate items in person at the Village to a VIV Board Member! Use this link to choose a convenient time that works for you!(https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSd5s9i3OIZmNFw2C/viewform) 3. If a monetary donation is easier, venmo @kylieklb with Hygiene Drive in the description. She will be donating all proceeds directly to VIP at the end of the drive! We hope that as many people as possible can participate in this especially important drive, given that many of the families served by VIP are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. If there are any questions or concerns please email [email protected] or DM us @usc.viv on Instagram!
