Congratulations to San Diego State University Aztecs for winning last night's game and clinching the Mountain West Title! The U.S. Coast Guard and SDSU are partners in the Go Coast Guard College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) program. This program offers college scholarships to selected students and guarantees a spot at Officer Candidate School to start a career as a Coast Guard Officer. Good luck in March, Aztecs!

Today, the Maritime Security Response Team visited Coast Guard Sector San Diego to train their K-9 Explosive Detective Team. The purpose of the training is to put the K-9's in a controlled situation where they will learn to remain calm while being in a stressful environment.

Coast Guard aviator number one Commander Elmer Stone served as the commander of Coast Guard Air Patrol Detachment San Diego in the 1930's. The crew of the Cutter Haddock conducts drills during a shakedown cruise this morning as they prepare to sail home following 65 days in dry dock for scheduled maintenance in Vallejo, California. Shakedown cruises are required when a cutter hasn't sailed in 60 days or more to test the ship's systems and machinery. We are proud to have the crew of Cutter Haddock sailing again!

Recently Sector San Diego recognized the crew of the small passenger vessel Pegasus for their efforts in recovering two Navy Seals from their capsized vessel 13 miles from the coast. Each crew member was given a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Sector Commander and an official Sector San Diego lives saved chip in recognition of their efforts.

Recently, Coast Guard Sector San Diego hosted an exercise featuring National Crisis Response Canines. Ten dogs and their handlers were brought in to have personal training with our pilots and Jayhawk Helicopter. Crisis response canines are trained to inspire recovery in people who have been affected by traumatic events. The exercise was meant to train the dogs to remain calm and listen to their trainer’s commands in a tumultuous environment.
