Congratulations to Biophysicist and Bridge Co-Director Scott E. Fraser for being one of 100 new members elected to the National Academy of Medicine announced this past Monday. One of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, his election citations are "for integrating biophysics, quantitative biology, and molecular imaging to enable unprecedented views of normal function and disease in live organisms, from embryonic development to old age." #science #medicine #classof2020
It's election season! Perhaps you have gotten your voter registration guide, and if you've voting in California, you may be overwhelmed by the twelve different propositions on your ballot. Rideshares, cash bail, dialysis, enfranchisement, rent control, and several other complex issues are to be discussed. Join the USC Science Policy Group and discuss the Props, bring your questions, and insights! Interested in presenting a pro or con for any particular proposition? Email [email protected] to let them know!

A recent article published by Nature shows the activation process of GABA-B, a protein receptor that calms brain activity works. Above is a ‘movie’ of four GABA(B) heterodimer cryoEM structures along its activation pathway. This discovery offers potential for the development of new, safer therapeutic drugs to treat neuropsychological diseases. Read more about the study at the link in our bio. Authors on the study include Hamidreza Shaye, Andrii Ishchenko, Jordy Homing Lam, Gye Won Han, Vsevolod Katritch and Vadim Cherezov from USC; Cornelius Gati from SLAC National lab; and Li Xue, Philippe Rondard and Jean-Philippe Pin from Université de Montpellier.
While the 2020 commencement was last week, we’d like to congratulate all of our past BUGS Summer Research Program participants that graduated last week. We wish them all the best on where their scientific journey takes them next! #tbt
Congratulations to the 2020 graduates that reside over at our home in Michelson Hall! While this is not how anyone anticipated the USC 2020 commencement, there is no denying how hard you all have worked for this day. With the rapid development of COVID-19, the past few months have shown us that the world needs scientific research now more than ever. We hope the next adventure is as exciting as this one! . . #USCGrad #USCDornsifeGrad #USCViterbiGrad #2020Trojan #FightOn
An international joint study, led by Professor Ray Stevens of the USC Bridge Institute along with the iHuman Institute at ShanghaiTech University and the Life Sciences Institute at the University of Michigan, is focusing on the determination of the melanocortin-4 receptor structure (MC4R). The understanding of this receptor could lead to advancements in how we treat obesity and other metabolic diseases. Read more about the new publication in the link in our bio! Happy #EarthDay! Despite being forced to keep our distance, we hope you are all managing to find (small or big) ways to take meaningful action to protect our planet. Here are members of the Pancreatic Beta Cell Consortium on Catalina Island with the @USCWrigleyInst!
We would like to take a moment to greet our Bridge Admin team a very Happy Administrative Professionals Day! We wish we could do more to celebrate, but a special thank you for everything you’re all doing to keep the Bridge going during this unprecedented challenge.
