CALLERY PEAR THORNS What seems like a shoot growing from a larger branch is actually a bark covered thorn. These thorns are extremely hard and can grow 1 to 3 inches long. They will easily puncture a child’s tennis shoe, your boot and even a tractor tire.
There is no such thing as a good pear tree, unless it’s one that actually bears fruit.
Great article with more information about Sudden Branch Drop.

BEWARE OF THE BRADFORD PEAR Although Brandford Pears are considered sterile, and will not reproduce among themselves, they do cross pollinate with other pear trees which then created the Grim Reaper of pear trees aka the Callery Pear or Chinese Callery Pear. These trees choke the life out of pines, dogwoods, maples, redbuds, oaks, hickories, etc. Callery Pears have 4 inch thorns that can’t be mowed down. Those thorns will shred John Deere tractor tires. Check out the lin...k below and find out why you should NOT plant a Bradford Pear Tree and why you SHOULD have them removed immediately!! As tree lovers we’d rather not remove a tree, but when it becomes a concern for safety, helping out the environment and saving our native trees, that’s what Arborists live for. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/3079715002
