The Urban community organized a school-wide teach-in on racism and anti-black violence which took place last Friday in response to the global Black Lives Matter protests. Keynote speaker Jason Jones, a formerly incarcerated person now working in tech at a non profit, shared his vision of education and activism. View the list of afternoon workshops that were held below as well as a comprehensive list of resources shared by Jason. It is with great sadness that we share with all of you the passing of an Urban legend, Dan Murphy. Dan had been at Urban for 50 years (1968-2017), teaching history and english, and as a dean and college counselor. He will always be a part of Urban and will be sorely missed. Our love and deepest condolences to each of you. A message from Jonathan Howland: "Dan was in deed and spirit a founder of the school a quirky, inspiring, and memorable teacher, a steadfast academic de...an, and an attentive and encouraging college counselor. More than what he did of course is who he was: present with his attention, funny, incurably curious, entirely honest. You couldn't pigeon-hole Dan. He was the son of a San Francisco fireman, parochial school-influenced, UC Berkeley- and Yale-educated. With Mary, his wife, he had a devoted meditation practice. An avid cyclist and runner, he lived light on the earth the familiar wardrobe, no meat, bike commuting to the city from Mill Valley for 40+ years. I'm sad and sorry to tell you about his passing and so grateful we shared a path with Dan. Our hearts go out to Mary and their three sons Aaron ('85), Patrick ('88), and Brian ('91)."
