Should you start breeding if your canaries are getting ready? Many novice breeders ask me this question, so here is my answer: Your canaries must either have recenly finished molt or finishng it soon. As you may know, molting is a critical and important part of any birds life cycle in which the bird's immune system weakens, due to the excessive amount of protiens, minerals in general and Clcium in particular, are used in making new feathers. So, if you have managed to get you...r birds out of molt succesfully, you have done a great job; congratulations. Most canaries, if right conditions are secured, (protien rich food, light, and temparature) they would get into breeding condition in no time. The question is: Should you start breeding once the birds are ready or should you not? I suggest you should not start breeding right after the molting season. Most of the problems that breeders face during breeding season is because this rush into breeding.immidiarely or soon after birds finish molt. You birds' bodies physiologically as well as psychologically are not ready to reproduce, yet. They are like teenagers; they love having fun but have problems in taking responsibilities. Male and females can be hyper that is why they may not want to incubate, feed the chicks, or they abandon the nest and kill babies or throw them out of the nest. Also, because of their bodies are not strong enough or internal organs may have not matured yet, as they have not had a chance to rebuild bones and musles, and their hormones are still not stabalized problems of infertility and Eggbinding occurs. Actually, eggbinding is a common problem with a much higher percentage in younger or underdeveloped females in which at the end the female tragically die as a resut. So, the best way is to give your birds a minimum of 4 weeks of rest (6-8 weeks are recommended) and 4-6 weeks of conditioning before you start breeding again. LET YOUR BIRDS REST for a better breeding season. Getting two clutches of 4 babies each, is much better than 4 clutches of 2 babis each. If you breed in an outside aviary, your birds should get into cindition just like wild birds--at the beginning of Spring. Personally, I will start breeding after Christmas.

A few tips for novice breeders: 1. Buy only quality birds from known breeders. 2. Do not jump on too many colors and mutations, or soon you will brcome a horder; as there are over 750 mutations of colorbred canaries out there. 3. Don't spend too much money on new mutations. It is obvious that they will be expensive. wait a year or two, their price will drop to half or even more. 4. Educate yourself and do your homework about the mutation that you want to get into. Make sure y...ou learn about its genetics, characteristics and deficiecies. 5. Do not buy a bird from anyone, and I repeat anyone, if you dont see the bird before you commit to buy. If the breeder is far and shipping going to be involved, make sure you see pictures of the Exact bird that you are going to buy. 6. It is a big mistake to assume just because someone has a big name as a breeder, all of his birds are top quality. Believe me, they too have too many jung birds. 7. Enjoy your birds as a hobby; you cannot be a feather merchant and a hobbiest at the same time. Feel free to ask questions.
