Did you know that being legally blind means that you can't see better than 20/200 with correction and have less than 20 degrees of visual field? This is when telescopes and magnifiers come in handy! We've got a plethora of devices suitable for all kinds of daily tasks that our patients may need help with.

A huge thank you to the Karl Kirchgessner Foundation for providing a number of our Pediatric Low Vision patients with brand new assistive technology equipment. Along with their fantastic family and doctors, our young patients were able to get a first look at these cool gadgets and test out the CCTV's and telescopes. Everyone is excited to start using the equipment to help them with school and everyday life! We are so grateful for the Kirchgessner Foundation and their long-time support of the University Eye Center and SCCO. Through their grants, they have helped provide services for economically disadvantaged school-aged children seeking low vision evaluations, testing, diagnosis, and devices. Virtual learning has become the "new norm" and has put a greater emphasis on screen time. To help our kiddos with their vision, the University Eye Center at Ketchum Health is excited to add a new tool for reducing nearsightedness (myopia) in our patients: MiSight. Made by CooperVision, MiSight is a daily disposable soft contact lens that is the first FDA-approved treatment and has been proven to slow the progression of myopia (also known as nearsightedness) in children. Schedule an appointment for your child's eye exam and learn more about this treatment!

Join us in honoring and celebrating Dr. Tim Edrington's amazing career as he embarks on his next chapter in life with his retirement. Dr. Edrington joined the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) in 1978. He served as the Chief of the SCCO Cornea and Contact Lens Service for 20 years. He is also the founding Coordinator of the Cornea and Contact Lens Residency program at SCCO and still serves in that capacity. In an open letter by Dr. Jenny Coyle, Dean of SCCO and... long-time colleague and friend, she highlights his many achievements and most notably the legacy he leaves with SCCO and MBKU, "What is not represented on his impressive curriculum vitae or embedded in his body of scholarly work is the significant impact he has had on his students, residents, and colleagues as a mentor." Thanks to Women Helping Youth, PPV has these low vision devices and many more to demonstrate to children like Yvette with permanent vision loss. Yvette received a dome magnifier to take home thanks to our Champion level donors John and Laurie Bucher.
