We are super proud to have our Executive Director, Ameneh, nominated by one of our providers for 2019 Senior Care Hero Awards. Ameneh has a heart of gold and always puts patient needs first. Please read the story behind the nomination and vote by August 31st using this link https://www.seniorcareheroawards.org//1648-ameneh-abusafieh I have worked with Ameneh and her team on many hospice cases. I have always found Ameneh to be the most compassionate and nurturing nurse and ...witnessed so many incidents of how she goes above and beyond to make a difference to her patient’s lives. A recent example is where a senior male was quickly diagnosed with only months to live and was refused hospice services by three other companies because he didn’t qualify for benefits. This once active patient became paralyzed in a matter of weeks and was stranded in a Skilled Nursing Facility. He quickly became depressed, sobbing daily because he wanted to be home with his family. Overwhelmed with shock, grief and the unknown; his wife and sons were unsure how they would care for him at home. Ameneh, met with the family and was determined to help. She quickly arranged hospice services to grant the patient and family’s wishes to have him home by Father’s Day. Her staff helped organize the home to fit all the medical equipment, nurses provided caregiver training to the family, and Ameneh even organized free professional caregiving to give the family a break. The entire team at Universal Health Net were involved in the care of this patient and family and were always across every detail. The nurse was also there overnight to comfort the patient and his family in his final hours. All this care was at an out of pocket expense to Universal Health Net, but no services were spared. This story is not unique for Ameneh. She also has patients who have exceeded their hospice benefits, but she maintains their services because she says: If we don’t look after them, who will? This truly is a nurse and a company that I would want to look after myself and my loved ones when the time comes for hospice care. She is creating a culture of love and compassion for her team to follow and spread and disrupting the hospice care industry for the better. See more

We are proud to announce our Chaplin has been nominated for Outstanding Senior Care Professional in the upcoming 2019 Senior Care Hero Awards. Please vote for Brett by clicking the link below. Hurry - votes close 31st August. https://www.seniorcareheroawards.org///1643-brett-paterson One moving example where Brett’s commitment and willingness to go above and beyond to change a senior patient’s life for the better was witnessed recently with an ALS patient. This senior hospi...ce patient was once a very active and fit man, riding his motorcycle and working on Hollywood movie sets until he was stricken suddenly with ALS. The patient, wife and Autistic son were struggling each in their own ways - emotionally, physically, spiritually, with the diagnosis of a non-treatable disease and its debilitating symptoms; and stages of grief. Initially they had refused Chaplin services as they did not have or want any spiritual ties. Through Brett’s sense of humanity, willingness to help, love, dedication and regular visits, he was able to form a connection with each family member and help them through their individual journeys to cope, accept and heal. This involved counselling, education, grief strategies, music and singing therapy; as well as a non-judgmental ear and warm heart. Eventually the patient communicated he had found peace with his illness and no-longer feared dying. He told Brett that he now believes in God and asked him to conduct the Memorial Service when he passes. Brett was honored to do this for the patient and the family. It was truly a beautiful Memorial Service that was marked with happiness and a poster of a man on a motorcycle flying through the sky with the heading: I’m now free. Brett truly is a remarkable human being. Universal Health Net and patients are blessed to have him as a Chaplin. See more

We are proud to have one of our nurses nominated for the upcoming Senior Care Awards and would love to share an example of why she is exceptional in going above and beyond for our patients. Please also help acknowledge Vaneza's work by voting for her via the following link https://www.seniorcareheroawards.org//o/1631-vaneza-vargas How Vaneza granted a dying senior man's last wish and blessed his family with one of the best days of their lives. Recently we had a senior hosp...ice patient diagnosed with three brain tumors who was paralyzed on one side of his body rendering him bed bound. He was in a Skilled Nursing Facility but wanted to get home for Father’s Day to be with his sons. His wife was overwhelmed with how to care for him. Universal Health Net paid out of pock and organized a professional caregiver to help the family look after the patient during the first few days of his arrival at home. Vaneza helped re-arrange furniture to fit hospital beds and equipment and ensured the family received all the support they needed with caregiver training, social workers, chaplain and volunteers, etc. It gets even better... The patient then pleaded with his wife to go to the movies one more time before he died. He's wife told him it was not possible as he was bed bound. Vaneza overheard this conversation and called our office manager to take action to make the patient’s dying wish come true. Vaneza together with the Universal Health Net team organized ambulance transportation to and from the VIP cinemas at Bella Terra- Huntington Beach, booked out the entire cinema, catered food and invited all the patient’s family and close friends to a private viewing of The Avengers movie. The cinema upon hearing the story comped the movie session. The patient was so elated with excitement that he was able to stay conscious for the entire 2 1/2 hour movie. The wife said it was one of the highlights of their family's life. Vaneza later stayed with the patient for 8 plus hours to provide nursing and emotional support to the patient and family as he passed. She also provided and coordinated the post care required to ensure the family was supported in every manner. It's also important to note that, Universal Health Net took on this patient knowing two other hospice companies had refused due to it not being a profitable case. Both Vaneza and Universal Health Net, epitomize the ideal care for an elderly hospice patient and truly live up to the Universal Health Net slogan of "caring for your loved one as our own".
