Happy #internationalorangutanday from the Sacramento Zoo's resident Sumatran Orangutans: Cheli, Makan, and Indah! Orangutans are the most arboreal great ape, as... well as one of the smartest. They can only be found in Sumatra and Borneo, and "orangutan" means "person of the forest." Unfortunately, the three species of Orangutans (Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli) are all critically endangered due to human threats- including their habitat being converted into palm oil plantations. Palm oil is used in a variety of cosmetics and food products. You can learn how to help reduce the demand for this ingredient by checking out Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's link below.
