Shirley Turner, marketing director at Hillcrest Retirement Community and Barbara Smythe of the Cultural Arts Society of La Verne, are working their magic to bring to the community a virtual tour of the LIVES OF SERVICE exhibit on display at The Gallery at Hillcrest. Former BVS staff Yvonne Belcher and Jerry David joined in on the socially distanced and safe fun to tell their stories and experiences while working in CastaƱer, Puerto Rico and Lybrook Navajo Nation in New Mexico as volunteers. . #community #onecommunity #brethren #churchofthebrethren #culturalarts #bvs #ivs #missionwork #giving #thankful #volunteer ULV Office of Civic and Community Engagement University of La Verne Alumni

A call went out from John McCormack Moore Laboratory of Zoology asking if anyone needed excess storage cabinetry and we *flew* at the opportunity! Not only do we now have much needed cabinetry for our smaller La Brea Tar Pit specimens, but a piece of Los Angeles history to boot. Thank you, John and Moore Labs of Zoology at Occidental College. We appreciate the partnership in our niche community and will definitely make use of these for years to come. Special shout-out to Ri...ck Scott and Scotty Forsyth in Facilities for helping to haul these beauties over from Oxy to ULV and then installing them inside our Annex. #community #museum #curator #storage #cabinetry #zoology #bonespecimens #bones #biology #labrea #labreatarpits #microfossils #partnership #grateful #reuse #repurpose #occidentalcollege #oxy #thethingsthatexciteus #leosforlife University of La Verne Communications Department

In our small way to bring some normalcy to the community, our latest installation "Lives of Service" at The Gallery at Hillcrest Retirement Community is open to the public, free of charge, every day 8am to 4pm. COVID PRECAUTIONS are in place: Wear a mask, check in with the receptionist, have your temperature scanned, visit only The Gallery, safely distance yourself socially, and enjoy a bit of #international #cultural #art and #history. #thegalleryathillcrest #hillcrestretirementcommunity #laverneca #cityoflaverne #community #brethrenservice #internationalvoluntaryservices #missionwork #hmong #laos #lybrook #navajonation #puertorico #africaculture #kundung #leosforlife #onecommunity ULV Office of Civic and Community Engagement University of La Verne University of La Verne Communications Department University of La Verne Alumni

Here we are meeting with #NEH #preservation consultants as we explain to them how we would love to digitize hundreds of photographs of the #Hmong in #Laos from the #VietnamWar [or the #AmericanWar depending], but we haven't the resourses nor equipment, much less the proper #archival material. It's for projects like this that we seek donations. Please consider us should you feel in a generous mood. We enjoy sharing our objects with the community, but without proper display cases we rarely get to pull out the good stuff. Over the summer, we borrowed this case. Follow the arrow... It's good thing that this case was locked inside an unusually empty building (due to Covid). But once the pandemic is over, so is our ability to share these treasures. Unless... Installing exhibits and interacting with students, young and old, is just one of the many ways that your donations help us to give back to the community.
