www.ukoboutique.com My mother Uko arrived in the United States with one suitcase at the age of 20. After struggling through English classes and becoming more comfortable with American culture, she finished school at San Francisco State with a double major in fashion merchandising and international business. She wanted to bring the style of up-and-coming Japanese fashion into the Bay Area and help accentuate the beauty and confidence each woman can embody in her unique way. Th...e first location, which opened in 1986a tiny and unassuming shop on a long, dimly-lit alleyway set off Union Streetwas a challenging space for any business. Despite such a difficult location, through word of mouth artistic, fashionable and edgy customers from around the Bay Area started flocking in. With my father David Scott (her then-fiancée), UKO boutique was created. After many years of long days and nights, international buying trips, and navigating being a small business, UKO became known as one of the Bay Area’s little gems with it’s distinctive curation of merchandise. Customers love stopping by at our store before running to their lecture, events, or work at city hall. We often receive feedback from local artists on our window, just last week an architect stopped in to tell us that everyday he walks by and loves to look at our window for inspiration even though we do not carry men's clothes. We have always catered towards people from all walks of life and would love to be able to continue to do so! Despite the sadness of David passing away in 2015, UKO maintains his legacy of hard work, passion, and dedication. I am now the second generation of the store and I cannot remember a time when UKO Boutique was not a part of my life. Over the decades I have watched UKO staff and customers form an expanding community. I always remember my parents saying that throughout the ups and downs of running a clothing boutique, getting to know our customers has been by far the most rewarding part. In today’s pandemic environment and the reality of San Francisco having become one of the most expensive cities in the world, no small business can know for certain whether they will survive in this city. What I do know is that UKO will keep evolving and adapting so that we can continue to build and serve our cherished community. With deep gratitude, Maya Scott

While we don't profit by selling $12 masks, we want to spread the idea that some masks can be super comfortable to wear (and stylish too!) because there has been so much resistance to masks being required. So thank you for taking small baby steps with us to fight Covid-19 ! Fashion Face Masks Made in USA www.ukoboutique.com
