Just like many other businesses around the world, the businesses in Westwood have been struggling to remain open, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In March, when UCLA students rushed out of Westwood, the shops felt an immediate impact. According to Andrew Thomas, in August 30% of Westwood was vacant as many businesses, including AT&T, Sur La Table and El Pollo Loco, have closed indefinitely. On the other hand, essential shops such as Ralphs, Target and CVS have not been largely affected but the lack of students, due to their goods having inelastic demand. With students slowly moving back to Westwood this Fall, maybe these businesses will be able to pick up again, and won’t have to shut down in the long run.

Donut Economics, proposed by Kate Raworth, provides a visual framework which combines planetary boundaries with the concept of social boundaries. The center of the donut depicts the part of society that lacks access to life’s necessities. These people need to overcome the social boundary, while simultaneously not overshooting and crossing over the ecological boundaries, represented by the outer circle of the donut. Economists should be focusing their efforts on keeping the economy within the confines of the two boundaries - or in other words, filling the donut.

While it may be a little early to start thinking about the holiday season, retailers surely are. It seems that this year, Santa’s across the US are more and more nervous to come to town. But this time it’s not because kids have been naughty or nice! Santas are especially concerned about catching the novel coronavirus considering many of them are already immunocompromised with diabetes or heart conditions. Normally holidays are a great time for shops to gain business, but it looks as though this may not be the case this year. Shops are considering closing down, especially around Thanksgiving, to avoid having large crowds at the stores.
