The current air quality in San Francisco and the Bay area is at a very unhealthy level. People with lung-related medical conditions, such as asthma, emphysema or heart disease, older adults, and children should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. These groups are encouraged to follow their health care provider’s guidance, and seek care in a timely manner if they have symptoms or concerns. Everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion. Please contact your health car...e provider if you experience the following symptoms: Repeated coughing Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Wheezing Chest tightness or pain Heart palpitations Nausea or unusual fatigue Lightheadedness Other recommendations to help manage health-related symptoms due to poor air quality include staying hydrated, using eye drops and nose sprays and taking throat lozenges.

ACRC SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Nirav Bhakta Dr. Nirav Bhakta received his M.D. and Ph.D. in cell physiology and immunology from Stanford University. Dr. Bhakta completed an Internal Medicine residency in 2007 and Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship in 2011 at UCSF. He was trained in human research in the ACRC and has been an investigator in the Airway Center for 6.5 years. His interests are in using samples of human lung tissue and blood to characterize the immune cells active in ast...hma and the resulting responses of lung cells in the airways. He is particularly interested in how these responses vary between individuals and in their potential to identify new treatment options. Dr. Bhakta has a quantitative background including a degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which he applies in order to extract insights from large data sets of gene expression and protein markers on immune cells. Dr. Bhakta's work would not be possible without the generous participation of so many volunteers over the years. He wishes to express his gratitude to all past participants. Photo by: Bobby J.
