Before turning his attention to COVID-19 this year, he battled Ebola in Africa, SARS in Vietnam, MERS in the Middle East and Avian Flu in Hong Kong. She is Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and was among the finalists considered by Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden as a running mate. As a lifelong community activist and former California Assembly Speaker the first African American woman in U.S. history to lead a state legislative body Bass has been a strong advocate for immigrants, foster children, education, gun control, the environment, and criminal justice reform.
