#UCSDSOMGrad On Sunday, June 6th at 10AM, the School of Medicine held its virtual Commencement Ceremony for the #classof2021 Our Commencement Speaker and University of California President Dr. Michael Drake left lasting remarks to our graduates stating, remember the humanity of your patients, and yourself. Keep your values at the heart of your practice. Fight for your patients (every one of them). And, finally, fight for a world where every person has equal access to care that enables them to pursue their dreams. We are so proud of our graduates and trust they will make amazing doctors. Rewatch the ceremony through the post on our page!

It certainly is a strange time to learn how to be a doctor," says #UCSDSOM MS3 Aislinn McMillan. "Third year has felt like what I came to medical school to do. My days vary a lot depending what rotation I’m on (some mornings starting much earlier than others). Usually, I have my breakfast and coffee in bed before heading to the hospital. All of the foundational knowledge and clinical skills learned during pre-clinical years now hold great relevance and purpose. Now when stud...ying, I have patients to keep in mind." - During these 'strange times,' our students have received the #COVIDVaccine this month. "I am also thankful to the essential workers around me who have worked tirelessly during this pandemic to keep the hospitals functioning. I cannot wait for everyone to have access to this shot. I am grateful for the evidence-based research and people who helped get us to this point, and I continue to be in awe of what science can bring us." - While juggling #rotations this past year, Aislinn is also in the Global Health Academic Concentration (GHAC) @ucsdsomghac. Looking at medical schools, the presence of global health opportunities was a crucial factor for me. UCSD was the only school I saw that had a global health program that guaranteed both mentorship and funding for incoming students to pursue their passions in global health. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of this program and had the opportunity to spend the summer between MS1/MS2 in Mumbai, India researching a diagnostic platform used to detect drug resistance in tuberculosis samples. Through GHAC, I gained insight into how I can see my career as a physician-scientist in global health that I would not have gotten otherwise." - From experience, she recommends to first and second years to take some time to think about/explore what you might want to go into. Once you start third year, you no longer have the flexibility in your schedule to go shadow specialties that you are not rotating on. Taking the #CareersInMedicine elective first year was a great opportunity to start thinking about these things early, and to get linked-in with shadowing opportunities." See more

Critical care health workers were among the first to receive the Pfizer-BioNtech #COVIDVaccine this week at UC San Diego Health. I’ll be able to keep my community, patients, family, colleagues, and med students safe, along with anyone who is around me, says #UCSDSOM Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs, Dr. Kama Guluma. We’re thankful for all of our #HealthCareHeroes - especially our Alumni Dr. Kevin Yang (‘17), Dr. Arvin Wali (‘18) and Dr. Jessica Erlich (‘1...9) along with our Faculty and Dean Emeritus, Dr. Jess Mandel - who have been at the frontline during the pandemic and were able to receive the vaccine this week. #InThisTogetherSD #UCSDCares

Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020. We are proud to feature Dr. Daniel Calac, Volunteer Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and Course Director for the #UCSDSOM Tribal Ambulatory Healthcare Experience. He became the first physician from the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians when he graduated from @HarvardMed in 1999. He currently serves as the @IndianHealthCouncil Medical Director, where he oversees medical care for 9 of the 18 Tribal Nations in San Dieg...o County. Dr. Calac is a man who has dedicated his life to serving Native Americans, mentoring them to be successful, and when appropriate, encouraging them to enter the medical profession. Most of my life has been about helping people, he says. I always strive to be a role model and a mentor. That has always been the attitude of everyone in my family. #NativesInMedicine #NativeHealth

"I got involved with the Ultrasounds within the first week of med school following the student organizations fair," says UC San Diego SOM MS4 Erick Torres. "The beginning of medical school was very exciting and I wanted to try something I had not done before." "A group of about 6 MS1's joined that year so it was a cool way for us to share an experience outside of lectures. Throughout medical school, Ultrasounds rehearsals became a weekly routine and an opportunity to forget a...bout school and relieve stress through music." COVID-19 has definitely changed how the group managed practicing and getting together. With the pandemic, the group has "kept connected with Zoom Tea session to discuss songs for the upcoming year and update each other on our lives." "Being a 4th year medical student on rotations during the pandemic has been an experience. Rounds and conferences are done in smaller groups or through zoom, expressions of both faculty and patients are partially blocked through masks, and the absence of visitors for patients is saddening. Nevertheless, patients need us now more than even and it's important that we abide by social-distancing and quarantine rules while trying to provide care." From Erick to incoming and current students: "There will always be a test to study for, but don't forget to nurture the non-medical side of your persona. Whether its music, dance, or drawing, try to keep a bit of time for creativity and art."

"In recognition of #WomenInMedicineMonth, we honor Dr. Patricia Bath, who took a special interest in combating preventable blindness in underserved populations, says UC San Diego School of Medicine American Medical Women's Association Student Interest Group. "Dr. Bath was both the first African-American to finish a residency in ophthalmology in 1973, and the first African-American female doctor to win a medical patent in 1989. Her revolutionary use of lasers has made the rem...oval of cataracts more accurate and less painful. Her research has helped restore or improve vision to millions of patients worldwide. I wanted to pretend-play and model myself after scientists, she told Time magazine when it included her in its Women Who Are Changing the World project in 2017. When we would play nurse and doctor, I didn’t want to be forced to play the role of the nurse. I wanted to be the one with the stethoscope, the one who gave the injections, the one in charge. "Throughout her career, Dr. Bath was an advocate for math and science education for girls. The ultimate goal, she told Time, was to level the playing field so much that a career like hers would not be the exception, and that any young woman with such interests could succeed. The narrative of surprise it has to change, she told the magazine. I realize that when I achieve these things it helps what other women, and other people of color, black women, can do. But keep in mind: I never had any doubts. "Dr. Bath passed last year from complications of cancer at a University of California San Francisco medical center, but her legacy lives on." #WIMMonth #WomenInMedicine #AMWA #DrPatriciaBath

Talk about a Flashback Friday! Things surely have changed a lot over the past 50 years. Built in the late 1960s, Garren Auditorium is located in the Biomedical Sciences Building (BSB). It has long served our medical students - from hosting lectures, electives, lunch talks, review sessions, and other special events when the campus is fully operating. While we may not fully be on campus right now, we can’t wait to safely #returntolearn and enjoy our beautiful campus spaces. ... This work is available from the UC San Diego Library. This digital copy of the work is intended to support research, teaching, and private study.

Let’s be BEAR-y safe during COVID-19. Our MASKots want to remind you to always wear a face covering to protect yourself and the Triton community. Practice social distancing of at least 6 FEET. Trust us, it’s paw-ssible. ... Lastly, keep washing your hands for 20 seconds or more. It may seem unbearable, but it’s definitely worth it. We hope you enjoyed our bear puns as much as we did. "My interest in global mental health was first sparked by my work in refugee camps in Greece and France," says rising second-year medical student Alec Terrana. "This ultimately drew me to the Global Health Academic Concentration (GHAC) at UC San Diego School of Medicine in search of a better understanding of the global health landscape and how I can best uplift and serve communities that have been severely disadvantaged by international power dynamic" Due to the pandemic, our... GHAC students had to change their plans from traveling globally to phone/zoom calls from home to continue their research. I’m spending this summer working with Dr. Wael Al-Delaimy and Somali Family Services to explore the concept of psychological resiliency within the Somali refugee community in San Diego. Our goal is to develop an understanding of resiliency that captures its unique dimensions within the Somali community and to discern its individual, familial, and communal contributing components. We hope that this investigation will provide a framework for identifying at-risk individuals and inform how to best direct resources that strengthen mental health within the Somali community. "As an aspiring combined family medicine and psychiatry physician, I’m eager to continue learning from communities, both locally and abroad, about how they understand their own health, where they draw strength from, and how I can best support them in achieving good health and wholeness.

#UCSDSOMGrads We asked Lauren Alderette and Ashley Ott to sit down to record separate podcast segments to reflect on their time at UC San Diego School of Medicine. These are two inspirational and humanistic individuals who gave great content for the podcast, however, we actually had different plans for them. They were instead surprised with letters from their parents who can't physically be with them to celebrate their commencement. Lauren will be at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in their Anesthesia Residency Program and Ashley will also be at MGH for Internal Medicine.
