"If I can't eat it, or it's not food for a butterfly then it doesn't go into my garden. For me to give up real estate in my garden, I want to know that it is serving a purpose and supporting local butterflies and other pollinators." - Heather Hafner, UC Master Gardener volunteer #NationalPollinatorWeek Learn more about Hafner's passion for supporting pollinators and the impact she's made as a 2021 Gardener with Heart in our most recent blog post: https://bit.ly/2TZEAsl

Fall means leaves change and drop to the ground we love the diversity of colors and the crunch of leaves underfoot, but most gardeners don’t love the additional work those leaves create. If you choose to manage leaves in your landscape, you can do it in different ways: - Compost - Mulching leaf blower or mulching mower - Raking

SAFE Landscapes shows step-by-step how to develop a fire-resistant landscape where plants and hardscape are maintained so that they do not easily transmit fire. We explain how to establish your defensible space so that the risk of fire transmission to your property is reduced, and fire fighters can safely protect your home. Fire is a part of the natural environment in Southern California. If you live in the wildland-urban interface, it is not a question of IF a fire will occur, but WHEN. Be prepared. SAFE Landscapes is focused on Southern California, but these basic concepts can be used and applied throughout California.
