UCLA Theta Chi fraternity brother, Erik "Rik" Weiss '02, lost his valiant battle against cancer in 2004 at the way-too-young age of 26. Rik lived life to the fullest, was always quick with a smile and a kind word, and was incredibly brave to the end. He devoted his short post-UCLA time to helping people in the Philippines through the Peace Corps. We are dedicating our efforts to raise money for this weekend's American Cancer Society Relay for Life at UCLA in his memory- Rik will be smiling down on us as Team UCLA Theta Chi fields the largest of the 94 UCLA Relay teams and attempts an astonishing NINE-Peat as Relay Champions. Please join our donors in funding cancer research and prevention by making a tax-deductible donation here: https://secure.acsevents.org/site//RelayForLife/RFLCY21WER. Thank you!

HAPPY 90TH, UCLA THETA CHI!!! On this day in 1931, Beta Alpha Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity received its charter. In the 90 years since, the chapter has never closed its doors and has initiated nearly 1,500 men. Heartfelt thanks to our Founding Fathers (pictured) and here's to another 90 years of building friendships that last a lifetime! #HappyFoundersDay

URGENT HELPING HAND REQUEST!!! For decades, our UCLA Theta Chi brother, James Baker '87, has been a stalwart supporter of the chapter- donating thousands of dollars each year to our SIXTEEN UCLA Dance Marathon and Relay for Life Championship teams. Bro. Baker has done so selflessly, with a HUGE heart, and without asking for any recognition. In 2019, not only did he win the Alumni Assoc.'s Alumnus-of-the-Year award, but he also won the Alumnus-of-the-Year award from our underg...raduate brothers! He also possesses the chapter's triple-crown- winning the annual poker tourney, annual golf tourney, and the March Madness pool. When we think Beta Alpha Theta Chi, we think of James Baker. Bro. Baker was recently diagnosed with stage-3 tonsillar cancer which has spread to his throat. His cancer treatment has already cost him over $50,000 in out-of-pocket expenses, with many more bills left to pay. And, being a self-employed realtor, he's struggling to generate income while fighting and getting treatment for cancer. Perhaps you are one of the hundreds of people Bro. Baker has given a Helping Hand to over the years? Please, please take a moment to help him in a time of dire need and keep him around for his wife, Analee, and his two school-age kids, Chloe and Chance. Thank you and Beta Alpha for Life!!! https://gofund.me/f125c28c

Hey brothers! My name is Alex Tam and this year I am the team captain for the Theta Chi Movember team and also a UCLA student ambassador. Movember is the world’s leading charity for men’s health issues such as suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. It’s a great cause that all the boys are happy to be supporting and I wanted to reach out and ask if the alumni would be willing to help us out and donate to our team Movember page. We’re currently second on the row for UCLA. Thanks for supporting men’s health! https://us.movember.com/team/2371653

Dear Beta Alpha Brother: Greetings from the Beta Alpha Alumni Association. It's been a tough year for us all- so many missed opportunities to congregate with family, friends, and other loved ones, including at the annual alumni events we host. May you and your families remain safe and in good health till this pandemic is over. It is with great sadness that I report the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved chapter brother, Adam Dobyns '02, this past Friday, November ...6, 2020 at the age of 41. The news was relayed to us by Bro. Kevin Brody '02. Bro. Brody was Bro. Dobyns' pledge marshal back in Fall of 2000. Adam leaves behind his wife, Kristen, who he met while they were both UCLA undergrads, and two small children- his son, Jackson, and his daughter, Emily. Bro. Dobyns was a pledge when I joined the Alumni Board. I remember Bro. Scott Sutherland '92 asking the pledges to assemble so that they could help us stock a bus to a Bruins football game. Adam and his pledge brothers showed-up all gung-ho and the guys on the board were so impressed by their spirit, sense of humor, and love of Beta Alpha. These brothers helped the chapter survive the dark days when we were transitioning into being the only dry house on campus and we are forever in their debt. I have since spoken with Bro. Dobyns' best friend, Bro. Greg Patterson '02. He and Bro. Dobyns were best friends before entering UCLA and they pledged Beta Alpha together. Bro. Patterson has been assisting Bro. Dobyns' family in dealing with this tragedy. Greg has asked me to pass along a request from Adam's family- If any Beta Alpha brothers would like to read about Adam's life, leave a remembrance of him, express condolences, or make a donation to lend a needed Helping Hand to his family, please click here: www.everloved.com/life-of/adam-dobyns/ Rest in peace until we meet again in the Chapter Eternal. UCLA Theta Chi is very pleased to announce that we have been honored by our national fraternity with the Phil S. Randall Success in Recruitment Award!!! We are one of only 23 Theta Chi chapters across the U.S. & Canada so recognized for excellent recruiting. During the 2019-2020 academic year, UCLA Theta Chi initiated 30 NEW MEMBERS! Had Spring Rush not been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, we would've finished Top-Ten nationally. Future's Bright, Beta Alpha! https://www.thetachi.org/twenty-chapters-recognized-for-rec

We know that this topic may be of controversy. But we as a fraternity have been heavily involved in social issues that we believe are absolutely integral to fight for. That is why is it is with great honor that we be given the opportunity to make a sizable difference in the Black Lives Matter movement. With the help of our philanthropy chairs, Alec Marcellin and Max McNeal, as well as our IFC Vice President of Philanthropy, Julian Adam, IFC has made the pledge to match any do...nation our chapter makes. As of this moment, we have raised $1,525 dollars for the BLM LA movement, meaning more than $3000 dollars would go towards the fight against systemic racism and police brutality. While these numbers are fantastic and our chapter is ecstatic to have such ardent supporters within our network, we would extend this fundraiser to any and all who follow this page. No donation is too small and even a dollar would mean the world to us in the Beta Alpha Chapter. If you would like to donate, funds are being centered at the Venmo @ThetaChiUCLA. We will be closing this fundraiser very soon in the upcoming days so as to support BLM while the fight is strong. If you’re hesitant to support, we would wholeheartedly understand, but the brothers of Beta Alpha strongly value this movement and it is only the goal of this page that we reflect that. We thank all of you in advance for your involvement! Photo and graphic from brothers Max Dallas and Austin Pham

A message from Theta Chi National President Tait Martin, PhD. Theta Chi stands for promoting knowledge, truth, tolerance, and harmony, and extending a Helping Hand. Racism is anathema to our principles and we denounce it. #BlackLivesMatter
