Greece’s Romaniote Jews are among the oldest and least-known of all the Jewish communities in the diaspora. Dr. Samuel Gruber and Renee Pappas speak with CEO Dan Mariaschin about the ethnic Jewish community that once thrived in the northwestern Greek city of Ioannina and talk about how the late Vincent Giordano's photos of the once-thriving Romaniotes inspired them to finish his work. Gruber and Pappas also talk about an exhibition centered around Giordano’s work, titled Romaniote Memories A Jewish Journey from Ioannina, Greece to Manhattan: Photographs by Vincent Giordano," that was previously hosted at the Embassy of Greece in Washington, D.C. and the Consulate of Greece in New York City. Meeting with Pavlos Demertzis-Bouboulis, Managing Director of the Bouboulina Museum in Spetses, and discussing new partnerships was an exciting part of our already busy day! This collaboration will be part of the selectively curated program that we will offer throughout 2021, on the occasion of the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution. We are thrilled that our community will have the opportunity to connect directly with the Bouboulina Museum in this particularly important year, during which the Museum will also be celebrating the quarter-century anniversary since Laskarina Bouboulina’s birth and its thirty years of operation. Stay tuned for more information!
