So many of us tend to multitask, especially while cooking. Please stay focused on the task at hand and always do a double check to assure that all appliances are in the off position before leaving the kitchen.#firepreventionweek

During the summer months as we venture out, it is extremely important to remember campfire safety tips: - Never leave a campfire unattended - Keep a bucket of water and shovel close by - Use caution when using an accelerant directly on the flames ... - Stack extra wood away from the fire pit - Never bury the coals; always use water to extinguish the fire - Children should be supervised at all times See more

May is Electrical Safety Awareness month. During our Covid pandemic, and the increase use of electronic devices in the home, UC Irvine Burn Program wants to remind the community of basic electrical safety tips. 1. Avoid overloading outlets 2. Unplug appliances when not in use. 3. Regularly inspect electrical cords for damage. 4. Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis.... 5.Never plug a space heater/fan into a power strip or extension cord. 6. Never run cords under rugs, doors or windows. 7. Make sure cord do not become tripping hazards. 8. Make sure you use proper wattage for lamps/lighting. 9. Ensure your smoke alarms are working, test them monthly. esfi.org This photo is of a low household voltage injury after a child was teething on a electrical cord.

During this time of social isolation, scald burns are on the increase. Many of us are spending more time at home and cooking. Frequently, scald burns happen in the kitchen, and with young children home from school, please be alert to cooking hazards. Remember to have a 3 foot "safe zone" around any cooking surface, including the microwave.

UCI Burn Prevention had a wonderfully successful community outreach event with the Clinic in the Park Family Health day in Anaheim, CA on Saturday 2/9/20. We spoke with over 350 people/families, educating the local community about burn prevention and basic first aid. A big thank you to my volunteer from UCI campus, Pearl, who assisted w/ Spanish translation.

National Burn Awareness Week continued.....! FIREPLACE BURNS Gas fireplace glass doors can reach excessive temperatures (1,300F / 704C). Serious burn injuries from the hot glass can happen in less than 1 second. Use safety gates, install screen barriers, and... supervise toddlers and young children around fireplaces! Glass fireplace doors remain hot for 1 hour+ after use. Make sure fireplace on switches and remote controls are out of the reach of children. Keep anything that can burn, children, and pets at least 3 feet from a fireplace. See more

HOT APPLIANCE/COOKING BURNS Always use oven mitts or potholders to remove hot items form the stove or microwave. Use the back burners of the stove to prevent children from reaching up and touching hot pots and pans. If you are overly tired, have consumed alcohol or medication, do not use the stove or stovetop!... After cooking, check the kitchen to make sure all burners and other appliances are turned off. PAVEMENT BURNS It’s so hot, you can cook an egg on the sidewalk! This is not just a saying; it can be the truth! Don’t be fooled, even when asphalt seems cool, it can reach high temperatures quickly. Even on cooler days, be aware of the temperature that the ground can reach so you don’t get burned. When it is 77 F, the asphalt can reach a temperature of 125 F.... If you wouldn’t walk on hot asphalt, why would you make your pets? Take precautions before taking your furry friends on a walk and be sure to protect them from the hot asphalt. HAIR APPLIANCE TOOLS/HOT OBJECT BURNS Children will grab anything that they can get their hands on. Keep hot objects away from counter edges and out of the reach of children. Did you leave your curling iron plugged in? Make sure to have a conversation with your children about never grabbing hair appliances that may still be hot after use, even when it is not plugged in anymore. Always make sure that you teach your children to not grab objects that can be hot. Going through a lesson of what is hot and what is not is a great way to start a conversation that can lead to saving them from a preventable burn injury. Help make childhood burn injuries disappear! Teach your children to not play with hot things and to always ask permission before grabbing cups or other items that may be hot.

The Phoenix Society and the World Burn Congress came to the Anaheim Convention Center for Wednesday Oct 2- Saturday Oct 5 for 4 days of healing, growth/empowerment, and community for burn survivors and those who love and care for them. The stories were beyond heart warming. The opening Walk of Remembrance brought tears to our eyes, a special fly over by a rescue helicopter was inspiring, as the sound of bagpipes filled the air.
