MD Maddy Basist, MD and UC Davis Emergency Medicine Residency Program resident Alex Schmalz, MD MPH as well as Kaitlyn Humfeld, PA. You should be commended for your hard work during these hard times. Thank you for stepping up and caring for critically ill patients with COVID19 at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York City. Queens has the highest number of deaths due to COVID19 in the country. Your job is not easy, but you all did it with professionalism, compassion, intellectual curiosity and grit. You are true heroes.

Emergency Medicine PGY3 Alex Schmalz and I are currently in NYC at Elmhurst Hospital, the hardest hit hospital in the nation. We will be here for 2 weeks return...ing 5/7/20. This disease is like nothing we’ve ever seen. Many are Comparing it to treating HIV/AIDS patients in the 80s. The pathophysiology that we’re seeing in the ICU where we are working is bizarre and deadly. I would encourage everyone to reach out to their family members wherever they may be to impress the importance of following social distancing ordering and to read reputable sources such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlantic. I hope everyone is doing well.
