Inspired by two of our students, UC Davis Health eliminated race-based reference ranges from a test routinely used to check how well a patient’s kidneys are functioning. The health system is one of the first in the nation to make the change to the estimated glomerular filtration rate or eGFR. We anticipate this change in the reference range for eGFR will lead to earlier detection and treatment of chronic kidney disease, more appropriate drug dosing and more eligibility for clinical trials and transplantation, said professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Lydia Pleotis Howell. https://ucdavis.health/3fFe0Mz
Saturday marked our 50th commencement ceremony! 104 graduates took part in the momentous event from their homes with family and friends. To commemorate our Golden Anniversary, a video of our school’s history was featured in the ceremony, accompanied by vocals and guitar from two graduates, Yen Lou and Nick Tom. The two vocalists harmonized to James Taylor’s You’ve Got A Friend, as key milestones were highlighted, starting in 1965 when the Regents of the University of California voted to establish a medical school at UC Davis.

We provide opportunities for our students to join four PRIME programs, which train medical student leaders to identify, understand, and serve the unique health needs of California's rural, urban, and valley. These students hope to be agents of change in the future, continuing to provide patient-centered care to those who need it the most. MS1 Sarah Spivack makes time to volunteer at the Yolo County free flu shot clinic in West Sacramento because she believes everybody should have access to vaccinations. Read why she was amazed to participate in the clinic last weekend: https://ucdavis.health/2SOBKmt
"In 2018, a woman working full time, year-round earned $10,194 less than her male counterpart, on average. If this wage gap remained unchanged, she would earn about $407,760 less than a man throughout a 40-year career. The gender pay gap is real, and the gender pay gap is everywhere. In part, the gender gap in negotiation explains why women in the United States continue to earn a fraction of men’s median annual earnings. Deeply ingrained societal gender roles lie at the root ...of the gender gap in negotiated outcomes. Join AMWA in conversation with Dr. Kimberly Elsbach, Professor of Management and Newberry Endowed Chair in Leadership tomorrow October 14 at 5:15 p.m., as she equips us with strategies for individuals who identify as women to navigate the world of negotiations." - UC Davis School of Medicine AMWA. The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is an organization which functions at the local, national, and international level to advance women in medicine and improve women's health. Our team of medical students at UC Davis AMWA strives to empower fellow medical students and provide a support system that advances the role of those under-represented in medicine. "I am a first-generation medical student and part of the TEACH-MS program at UCDSOM. In my career, I want to practice in urban underserved areas, where many families and individuals will be facing challenges far beyond my own lived experiences. It's important for us, healthcare professionals-in-training, to continue our learning of systemic issues and public health crises, so that we are informed, reflective, and better prepared to care for our patients in the future. The CHE...q Conference is a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of how our communities are impacted by the world today, and I am excited to share these opportunities for conversation with the broader community." - MS2 Angela Nguyen. Don't forget the annual CHEq conference is this Saturday, October 3rd, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.! Register here: https://ucdavis.health/32uGzqI
