Our Wine Writers Collection was created, in part, to recognize the significant role that wine writers have played in educating the public about wine. Wine writer Jancis Robinson, whose papers we hold, recently shared her thoughts on the need for wine language including her own to evolve beyond the limitations of a Eurocentric tasting vocabulary to reflect more diverse voices and experiences. Everyone agreed that there is considerable work to be done on wine vocabulary,... but the greatest scorn was reserved for tasting descriptors such as ‘masculine’, ‘feminine’ and ‘sexy’. Jancis Robinson, about panelists at a session on tasting notes at the 2021 Professional Wine Writers Symposium. It’s all right to not know; it’s what you do with your not-knowing. Claudia Rankine, award-winning author, playwright, poet and multimedia artist Tomorrow at 4 p.m. PST, Claudia Rankine comes to UC Davis, virtually, for a reading and lecture based on her new book, Just Us: An American Conversation, which is being hailed as a must-read book this fall, and her magnum opus. Her previous book, Citizen: An American Lyric, a meditation on race relations in the United Stat...es, is widely considered one of the most influential books of our age. In revelatory and ingeniously written essays that mix text and visuals, Rankine questions what it means to interrogate white privilege, liberal politics, white male aggression and much more. Coming the day after the U.S. presidential election, this online event, like Rankine’s intimate book, promises to bring us into a necessary conversation about what we don’t know. It's not too late to register online and join us tomorrow: https://ucdavis.zoom.us//register/WN_quKuhrwnTxqWUcEx3MMruw This event is organized by the UC Davis Creative Writing Program, UC Davis Department of Religious Studies, and Manetti Shrem Museum, and 23 UC Davis co-sponsors, including the UC Davis Library.

When plotting the data on a map, the unevenness of overcrowding across prisons was very striking; individual prisons might have 1.5 to 2 times the number of inmates they were designed to house. -- UC Davis PhD candidate Erin Calfee, commenting on what her team of grad students, "Miss Demeanors," learned in examining the historical context of Proposition 20. Hear from all three winning teams at the online finale, tomorrow at 5pm! Register at bit.ly/CAdatachallenge.
