Due to its pliable surface, standing on two feet on a rebounder challenges our balance and proprioception. Try this challenge to improve your balance, coordination and focus: 1. While on your rebounder, stand with arms out to your side, with hands in your peripheral vision and lift one leg to a bent knee at hip height and attempt to hold that balance pose for 30 seconds or more. ... 2. Then do the other leg. 3. If you can do this with some level of confidence, try it with your eyes closed. When we close our eyes, we take away visual cues that we typically rely on to inform our body where it is in space (proprioception). I can't tell you how often I get a new client who's very athletic and fit but struggles with balance. Fitness alone is not a sign of strong balance! Everyone's balance can improve and this is especially important as we age! The risk of falling and getting life-threatening injuries increases dramatically as we age. One of the top causes of death over the age of 65 years old is injury from falling. So whether you have a rebounder or not, I encourage you to do this exercise a few times a week. Having good posture is important for boosting energy levels, reducing pain, and can even help increase your self-esteem! Many of us sit at a desk and/or drive hours in a day which can lead to poor posture. ... Use rebounding to help improve your posture! To do this, stand tall when you gently bounce line up your head, shoulders, hips, and heels, as if they were stacked on top of one another with belly buttom pulled to spine. This will keep your spine in proper alignment! Then create a little bit on energy aka contraction between your shoulder blades. I always say "Light up the area between your shoulder blades!" Your posture is formed by a strong core and upper back strength. Remember keep your knees slightly bent to avoid injury and drive your weight down through your heels as much as your toes. Do you often set goals to get healthier but have trouble following through on them? A simple tweak to your goal-setting process may be all you need to keep your healthy resolutions in 2021. Often people struggle with adopting new habits that will help them reach their goals because they haven’t clearly defined their Why. That is, their "why" isn't big enough - they haven’t connected to the deeper reason they want to achieve these goals and what it will mean for their life.... And it’s difficult to stay committed to a goal when we’re not clear on why we’re doing it. To successfully reach your goals, your goals need to FEEL deeply meaningful to you. Here are some quick, simple questions to ask yourself to get clear on your Why, so you can be successful in reaching your healthy goals this year. It's vital that you ask yourself all of these questions, in this order. This will get you to go deeper, to get to the root of your "Why". Why do I have this goal? (This one is pretty straightforward :-)) How will I FEEL when I reach this goal? What will reaching this goal improve for me and for those around me? Why do these feelings/improvements matter to me? Once you’ve defined and deepened your Why, revisit it often. Read your answers to these questions every day, especially when you’re tempted to fall back into old patterns. I’d love to know your shallow Why and the deeper one you discover after doing this exercise - so I can cheer you on! Let me know what you came up with in the comments!

You may already know that rebounding is a fantastic form of exercise. But do you know why? Happy Thanksgiving Week In the face of so much loss, overwhelm & stress, 2020 has illuminated the need and desire to take stock of what we DO have, what we CAN celebrate and that which we hold sacred. For me, there is so much on this list: My health, despite some setbacks, my family in all its textures, my business and my choice to lead with my heart and do what I WANT TO DO in this precious life My simple advice for today & this season: 1. Wake up with purpose & love in... your heart; however simple, your purpose matters so much. And love frees us. 2. Go to bed with genuine gratitude for a day well lived & loved. If you need to make changes in your life to achieve this, make them. Find the support you need to do that. I’m here for all of it. I’ll support you. Remember, it is small daily choices that lead to big, long-term success, so don’t scare yourself out of change with an-all-or-nothing mindset. You don’t need to know every detail about how to achieve your long term goals, whatever they are. Your WHY will evolve as you move almost your journey because you will evolve with the simple changes you’re making. You just need to know the goal and the general direction you want to move into, you need a rough plan to get you going in that direction and that is what I am here to help you with. The words "motivate" and "motivation", and phrases like "to be motivated" or "get motivated" are so over-used, I think we've lost touch with the root meaning. At its core, motivation is your 'WHY', and having a 'WHY' is deeply personal.... And our reason, our 'WHY" isn't always obvious or clear to us. So I encourage you to think about your 'WHY'S'. Because when they become clear to you, you will move through your life in an entirely different way. And that way promises more truth, more courage, more awareness, more abundance, more freedom, more joy, more YES! So....Why do you exercise? Why do you choose to eat food that supports your health or why do you choose not to? Why do you want more money? Why do you do the job you do? Why is it time to change careers, cities, partners? What does self care mean to me? Self care is not just about luxurious moisturizers and green drinks - though I do LOVE both Self care does not look the same in everyone's life. Self care is not a desire, it is a necessity. Self care for me is sitting still, clearing my mind, doing a Peter Russell meditation (link in bio if you want to do it too!). Self care for me is saying "no." It is setting boundaries and making sure others respect them. Self care for... more is being a strong independent woman and getting things done, but also knowing when I need to ask for help or support. Self care for me is listening to my body, listening to my gut feelings, and living my life as authentically and honestly as I can! Being in the middle of pandemic with fires surrounding many of us, trying to get our children into a routine of distance learning, and so much more means that self care gets put on the back-burner. But it's actually more important than ever to prioritize self care. We need to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of each other and the world around us. Want to know how to ditch unwanted belly fat? As women age, we experience hormone changes, and very often unwanted weight gain-specifically belly fat. There are many reasons for this, but today I'm focusing on why exercise alone is not the answer. Belly fat is not only frustrating, but puts you at greater risk for heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and more. As our hormones shift, a major player is Cortisol. Things that can elevate Cortisol... levels: Lack of sleep (both in quantity and quality) Over exercising both for too long or too frequently Not eating regular meals High stress levels Did you know you can have elevated blood sugar levels if you eat too little? If you’re eating "low carb" or you chronically diet (restrict calories) you likely have elevated insulin levels. Cortisol + Insulin = belly fat The past strategies for maintaining your comfortable weight, like exercising more & eating less are the exact strategies that will backfire during & post menopause. Things that are bringing me joy right now I know we all feel how challenging life is right now - and the stress and uncertainty is taking a toll. This is why, more than ever, it’s imperative that we cultivate and savor simple moments of joy when we can. It's one of the gifts of this pandemic: time for simple pleasures. Here are my current joys: ... 1. Books - A simple pleasure that also helps me sleep is to cozy up in bed at night with a good-but-not-too-demanding book. With my stress at an all time high, my mind and heart need juicy-not-too-demanding themes right now. I recently enjoyed @aliciakeys’ memoir More Myself and Untamed by @glennondoyle. 2. Swimming - I've never been a swimmer, but due to injuries, swimming is a physical activity I can do that actually feels good. Covid has given us free time and our weather has been unusually hot AND it's been a perfect opportunity to be sure my kiddo learns to swim! 3. Time to heal - I've been overworking my body for years and it was breaking down. These months have afforded me the chance to rest/heal. I'm embracing the resulting weight gain as part of my body's protective layer. I know I'll have the chance to get back into fit form, but for now I'm celebrating this season as restorative. 4. Coaching clients thru nutrition & health transformations - Quarantine has brought up ALL KINDS of personal challenges for people and one of the biggest I'm hearing about is unwanted weight gain & loss of structures that support self-care. People are reaching out for nutritional support which I'm honored to be able to provide! 5. My kiddo's health - Because he's home so much right now, I have control over what my son eats. His sleep and general attitude have improved during quarantine and I know it's related to eating more whole, plant based foods. Food is medicine. Working out is not a space to repent for your dietary "sins". Why? The gym or your workout space should be the place and time to celebrate what your body CAN DO! Not punishment...for anything. It is a time to care for this vessel that gets you thru life, even when it's tired, injured or sick.... Diets suck. Someone once said, "the word diet includes the work 'die' in it!" I don't like the phrase "cheat' meals either. Dichotomous thinking about food leads us to dangerous eating patterns. I don't use these words w/my kiddo because I don't want him to think there are "good" foods and "bad" foods. Some are just more nutritious than others. Can we stop using phrases like "cheat meal" or "guilt-free"? Simply strive for 80% whole plant based, high nutrition meals and enjoy 20% less nutritious meals. They're both delicious and serve us in different ways! Trying to "work off" a meal is not only demoralizing but it's also a waste of time. Your NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis aka your daily movements thru life) over the period of a few days will contribute more to counteract that indulgent meal than a HIIT session done out of "guilt". STOP! Studies have shown that how you FEEL about what you're eating effects how it gets processed in the body. So enjoy that milkshake and then move on, trusting that your next meal will be an alkaline producing, nutritious meal. It's called balance and it's called enjoying your life! The way you think is the problem. Change your attitude, change your life! If you want change - in any aspect of your life- you need to get honest, real and humble. And I'll go even further to say that generally people let their lives be ruled and shaped by focusing, dare I say, obsessin...g, on the things that deliver very little satisfaction and in fact keep them marinating in the same "life is not as I want it" soup. For instance: How long have you been wanting to lose the weight? Be honest? No matter your age, your circumstances, your finances, your gym-membership or not... you CAN lose the weight. 5 Tips to building a new habit 1. Identify your WHAT & WHY - what is the new habit you want to implement, and why will it benefit you? 2. Schedule your habit into your calendar. In my life, if it's not written down, it's not happening!... 3. Change the size of the change - aka shrink the size of the goal so that it's actually doable! 4. Stack your habit - aka connecting this new habit with a current one; this also builds new and stronger neuron connections in the brain! 5. Set up Accountability and Support. A psychological principle called the Hawthorne Effect holds that we perform better when we know we’re under the observation of others. This is why accountability is so powerful when it comes to building new habits. There are many ways you can do this: Write a commitment contract and then share it with your partner, friend, an online community related to your habit, your social media followers, or your health coach - that's me! Tanya's lunch go-to: Organic Vegan Chickpea 'Untuna' Salad! Ingredients: 1 can Organic Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) - drained and rinsed... 1 TBLS Veganiaise or organic mayo (or apple cider vinegar for low fat option) Dash of Black salt -this is a strong salt & provides yummy "eggy" flavor 1/4 tsp Fresh or dried dill - add more or less to taste preference 1/4 tsp Fresh or dried parsley - add more or less to taste preference 1/8 tsp garlic powder 1/4 cup chopped dill pickles 1/4 cup chopped celery or more if you like a chunky salad like me! 1/8 cup red onions Pink Himalayan salt and black pepper to taste Instructions: Chop chickpeas in a food processor until ground but not mashed. You want it to be a little chunky but not whole beans. Add all other ingredients and hand stir to blend. Keep adding herbs and spices to your taste preference. EAT! It's great w/whole grain crackers or in a sandwich or atop romaine lettuce leaves. Add avocado if you want!
