Truth Aquatics

We are very sorry to announce that our beloved Captain Davey Woodland passed away yesterday. Captain Davey Woodland was with Truth Aquatics on and off since the early 90’s, when he joined the company as a deckhand aboard the Conception. Raised in Los Angeles, Davey grew up around the ocean, so it was only natural that he became a scuba instructor. After teaching in LA and Ventura, he came to Santa Barbara and continued his ocean adventures. Davey accumulated sea time in his 2...0’s and obtained his US Coast Guard Master’s license, and acted as Captain of all three Truth vessels at various points in his career. He took some breaks from the seagoing life at various times, once to obtain his pilot’s license. Back with Truth Aquatics once again, Davey was in command of the Truth since November of 2013, running her out of Long Beach Harbor for a few winter seasons and later solidly established back in Santa Barbara. The variety of trips that run aboard the Truth scuba diving, kayaking day trips, island adventures and research trips were well suited to Davey’s colorful personality. He enjoyed meeting a wide variety of guests and could occasionally be found up in the wheelhouse, rocking out to the BeeGees or playing his own bass guitar, treating passengers on the sundeck to an impromptu concert. With the continued calls and request for tours, we want to announce that we are officially suspending all operations of our Truth Aquatic fleet for a to-be-determined amount of time. We apologize to our customers who have been seeking reservations as well as those with reservations and truly appreciate the expressions of support. Right now we feel it's important dedicate our entire efforts to make our boats models of new regulations that we will continue to work on with the NTSB and Coast Guard.

My family and I are speaking today with extremely heavy hearts. No words will ease the pain that loved ones are feeling. We extend our deepest condolences to all those involved in this horrific tragedy. We have not yet made a public statement because we have been working tirelessly with the NTSB to find answers. As a member of the NTSB task force committee, we are prevented from commenting on details of this active investigation. We are committed to finding accurate answers ...as quickly as possible. Yet, we can speak to our emotions. We are utterly crushed. We are devastated. We are a small, family-run business that has taken this event entirely to heart. Our customers are like family to us, many returning for decades. Our crew is family. Our lives have been irreversibly changed by this tragedy and the sorrow it has caused.
