Between babies, chickens, business, cleaning, laundry, cooking & repeat. it seems like a very unrealistic thing in life right now and I don’t feel bad about that at all. ... . These two are a dream. . Sure we have tantrums, strong wills after sleepless nights, endless laundry, etc.. but we also have so much joy, so much love, so much laughter. . This is for certain a new season, I’m not as involved with the outside things, I’m not drill in hand building alongside Luie, I’m not washing the eggs, collecting & packaging. It feels really strange to be involved but sort of displaced from the standard routine we’ve followed for so long. ... . It is a very different season of life right now, but so incredibly special. . Things are slower & faster all at the same time, it takes more time to do all my normal tasks with eager little hands wanting to help me in all I do. . I am learning to let go and enjoy this time of excitement to ‘work’ hoping it will instill a deep sense of responsibility and ownership over the beautiful job we get to do in raising these beautiful animals and caring for our land and souls all at the same time. . I sometimes worry that In all the things I do, I am somehow not giving them what they need but realizing everyday more & more they are getting it all and so much more. . I can’t help but smile as I see Abby whaling around the house/outside/or in the pastures doing mimicking me as she makes her ‘customer calls’ Or is in the ‘office’ prepping routes, paying bills, etc. . I love that’s she always asks her customers how they are doing, that her pretend play is so full of connection and sweetness. . You may have heard is said, "An egg is an egg." But here at Happy Hens, we beg to differ! . Walk into any grocery store today and mosey on over to the egg counter and you will be FLOODED with great sounding options like; "Free Range" "Organic" "Free Range Organic" "Cage Free" "Pasture Raised" "Certified Humane" "108sq ft" etc. . In many cases all these chickens are raised in masses (some pasture raised flock now have over 20,000 hens living in a stationary building with "p...asture access"). . We are pretty simple folks, Luie and I, and often try to put ourselves in the hens position. If I was living in a crammed area with people all around me ALL the time I'd probably get pretty scrambled on more than one occasion. . If you haven't ever seen a "Free Range" or "Cage Free" or sadly even "Pasture Raised" egg operations you'd likely never consider any of that. .
