We love the term "Happy Moments"! We see those all the time in our programs! A 2019 study published in Health & Place found that time outdoors increases kids’ chances of experiencing moments of happiness. This study, involving more than 10,000 children using body-worn sensors, suggested that the odds of experiencing what the researchers called happy moments were 2.4 times larger in public spaces such as open fields and plazas than in commercial areas like malls.

We believe our work getting #morekidsonbikes is important and impactful, but why listen to us when you can hear it from one of the amazing kids we serve! Here are some excerpts from a conversation with "Bruce", a 10 year old at St. Vincent's, who recently completed our Mobile Bike Workshop program. What was your most meaningful moment during Mobile Bike Workshop (MBW)? The most meaningful moment of my time with the MBW would be the day that I realized that if I’m on a ride s...omewhere and I get a flat tire or broken chain, that I can actually fix it myself and not be stuck. What was one thing you struggled with during MBW? How did you overcome it? I struggled with figuring out how to assemble and put on a new set of handlebars. It was frustrating but I was able to ask for help and now I know how to do it myself. Did you earn a bike? If so, how did it feel to receive the bike you earned, and what have you used it for? I did earn a bike. It is a blue Mountain bike with lots of gears. It makes me feel very happy. With my new bike I am able to ride all over campus and in the hills around where I live. It is also a great way for me to exercise my thighs and legs which has made me a stronger and more confident rider. If you could describe your experience in the MBW program in one word what would it be? One word that I feel best describes my experience in MBW would be WONDERFUL! Our hearts go out to the Sports Basement family for the sudden and tragic loss of Tom Trauger in a recent cycling crash. TFKM Community - We ask for your voices. San Rafael is currently in the process of receiving feedback on the San Rafael Transit Plan. One of the options being considered - the "Under the Freeway Alternative" - would result in our block (and the TFKM building) being removed. Trips for Kids Marin runs the Re-Cyclery bike thrift shop from our 4th Street location which is a critical resource for many within Marin, including some of our most vulnerable. As a bike thrift shop, we are an important part of the transportation landscape within San Rafael. Happy National STEM day! We use the bicycle as an engaging tool to teach all kinds of STEM concepts across all of our youth programs. For example, our Earn-A-Bike programs discuss math when teaching how to measure the speed of a bicycle and execute engineering principles when practicing the importance of leverage while wrenching on a bike.
