Poetry for the Soul: Love After Love by Derek Walcott. Artwork by MorJer on DeviantArt. The time will come when, with elation... you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other's welcome, and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self. Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit. Feast on your life. (found in his Collected Poems: 19481984.) One of the myths associated with self-compassion that Dr. Kristin Neff has identified is the notion that self-compassion is equivalent to self-indulgence. In fact, it may be the main reason that we are reluctant to practice self-compassion. So let’s differentiate the two. Self-compassion doesn’t entail engaging in activities that help us numb out feelings, and dodge our thoughts - although, honestly, a balanced dose of that when necessary isn’t the end of the world; we all d...Continue reading

Egg symbolism, dreamwork, & meanings (artwork by WoodHorsePress on Etsy @krisjohnsonmichiels) In many creation myths, the Universe is hatched from an egg, which has everything within itself and requires only incubation. The form this cosmic hatching takes places varies. Often, the egg rises from primeval waters and is incubated by a bird or a birdlike deity, uniting the chthonic and the spiritual, that lays and sits on the egg. More specifically, the World Egg, also known as...Continue reading

A while back, I shared the story of the Golden Buddha statue, as it was told in one of Tara Brach’s teachings. A brief synopsis of the story portrays this statue as covered over with clay. One day, the monks discovered that it was pure gold inside; it had been covered with clay in order to protect it from invading armies and political instability. Dr. Brach shared this story to illustrate how we create protective patterns in our own lives in order to guard our inherent goodn...ess through life’s tribulations. Moreover, we tend to become identified with the manners in which we are protecting ourselves we identify with the critical self, the insecure self, the self-disparaging self, and forsake our true Selves. Indeed, this forsaking the non-remembering of our essential goodness and awareness of loving energy within and around is at the root of our suffering. While our protective patterns want to do good by us, shield us, and alleviate our pain, often they disconnect us from sharing intimacy with ourselves and others. So, even when we perceive our loving presence, we become afraid of engaging with it because our coping patterns have taught us otherwise, and those coping patterns are too safe, and too familiar to risk letting go of. As we go through life, our protective patterns become the blueprints we apply to our relationships, even though we may experience an underlying sense of unfulfillment, of holding back, of incompleteness. Surely enough, we create and maintain our distance that we just repeat, caught in a loop, and automate the process. Spring Symbolism (wonderful artwork by @katfedora) Ever since ancient times, humans have held distinctive festive energies for the turning of the Seasons. Perhaps the greatest outpouring of emotions has been in relation to Spring, the time of year when the Earth is no longer captive to the whims of Winter. Humankind has expressed this energetic surge in the form of religious and spiritual rites and rituals, since for the ancients all aspects of life were inseparable from reli...gion and/or spirituality. Especially with the advent of agriculture, Spring seasonal rites held an even greater significance, for they marked the return of fertility and rebirth. The Babylonians in Mesopotamia celebrated Spring with ritual reenactments of their Creation myth. The ancient Greeks held the Festival of Flowers to celebrate fertility and honor Dionysus, with plenty of feasting, drinking, expressions of carnal desire, as well as honoring the Dead and their ancestral ghosts. Roman festivals such as the Salii, Parilia, the later Lupercalia and frenzied Bacchanalia, carried many of the Greek traditions, with a combination of ritual sexuality and honoring Earth’s fertility. The Romans also had the March celebration of Hilaria, which involved processions and sacrifices, abstention from meat and other restrictions, as well as the celebration of the resurrection of Attis, the god of vegetation who originated from Phrygia and was considered Cybele’s consort. This resurrection motif can be found in many religions during the season of Spring. Indeed, the idea of a deity who dies and is brought back to life is a collective narrative in the ancient world, predating the Bible. Other common motifs across cultures include feasting, dancing, giving up meat, masks and costumes, warding off evil to protect the crops, freeform expression of sexuality, and sacred marriage. Othering & Belonging: Humanity has been plagued with the problem of othering.
