During this morning's eclipse, we watched measurements from a 20MW solar power site in Bakersfield, CA. The picture below shows generation (yellow line) and plane of array irradiance (green line) during the eclipse. Note that power output dips at exactly 9:00 AM. As part of it's power management tactics during the eclipse, CAISO sent this site an ADS set point to guide generation between 9:00 and 9:05 AM. Over the next 2 hours, CAISO sent 35 such ADS requests which allowed t...hem to carefully manage this site as part of its state wide energy control system. Because Trimark's T1-S SCADA is fully integrated with CAISO's ADS these requests were received, validated, and automatically executed -- freeing up operators to manage other sites.

A Record-Breaking Day for Renewables. Renewable Power set a record last week when CAISO served 56% of its demand for electricity from Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Biomass and other renewable resources, according to an article in Electrek. The challenge in 2017 is an overabundance of hydroelectric generation. That means renewable generation may be curtailed to avoid over generation.... Today, our metermen helicoptered to Hell Hole, and back. After an unprecedented spate of winter storms, California’s infrastructure is still restoring operations. For example, at Hell Hole Reservoir, deep in the Tahoe National Forest, communications to the revenue meter at the hydroelectric dam remain out. So is the road. To reach the facility, Placer County Water Authority gave Trimark metermen Ken Williams and Don Clifton a lift. On site, they retrieved metering files and ...surveyed conditions for a future meter replacement. They also confirmed that snowballs actually DO have a chance in Hell Hole, California. Our Remote Intelligent Gateway (RIG) provides secure, real-time communication between resources and the CAISO. The RIG allows CAISO and utilities to send curtailment commands or trigger plants to increase generation.
