Sharing excerpt from USA Today, 9.10.2020: MILWAUKEE Kristina Starcevic grew up listening to stories from her dad, a former newspaperman, about the adventures he had hitchhiking in his 20s. She wanted to have the types of stories he did. How can I travel but still make it safe?" she asked herself. "And nursing was it for sure.... Nursing? It usually doesn’t spring to mind when people seek out an occupation with opportunity for travel, Starcevic, 33, acknowledged. But she begs to differ. And the numbers back her up. Staffing Industry Analysts, an independent research and advisory firm, estimates there are between 40,000 and 50,000 traveling nurses on any given day. Generally, they travel a minimum distance from their own home, such as 50 miles, and work 13-week contracts. But some go across the country or even overseas for a year at a time. Openings for these nurses, who virtually become itinerant laborers, increase during flu season and from July through October to handle the annual surge in newborns. They head to rural and urban areas alike, and sometimes they rush toward calamity: New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina, the Midwest for flooding, California for any number of wildfires. And now, they typify a booming labor niche during the COVID-19 pandemic. See more

Happy ER Nurse Appreciation Week! (October 11 through 17, 2020.) A few reasons these nurses deserve the acknowledgement. A) Emergency Room Nurses See it All From Splinters to Trauma ER nurses never know what patient with what ailment is about to walk through their doors. It may be a five year old boy with the impacted splinter, the horror of a penetrating gunshot wound, or anything in the gamut of the diseases and injuries in between. When a patient walks or is wheeled ... into the hospital emergency room, these nurses deal with them quickly and professionally regardless of the patient’s age, illness, or injury. B) The Frontlines of COVID-19 - In these challenging times of COVID-19, emergency department (ED) nurses are vitally important. In this year of so many catastrophes, both natural and manmade, ER nurses never stopped helping patients. While so many Americans were dealing with hurricanes, fires, shootings, and infectious disease, Emergency Room nurses held their ground and served their communities in the most trying times. They cared for patients in spite of unusual patients loads, limited space and supplies, and severe environmental challenges. They put their own safety and wellbeing on the line to ensure the safety and wellbeing of others. C) Jack of All Trades - Nurses in the ER don’t have the luxury of being extra specialized in one area of expertise. Instead, the ER RN needs to know how to do a bit of everything quickly and competently. They can’t pass off a cardiac patient to someone else because they know pediatrics better; they must care for patients as they are assigned. This requires an immense breadth and depth of knowledge. That’s a key reason why emergency room jobs for travelers are always available and why a skilled ER nurse is an invaluable asset to any medical facility. THAMK YOU, most sincerely!
