Happy International Translation Day!!! International Translation Day is celebrated every year on September 30 on the day of the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by FIT (the International Federation of Translators) ever since it was set up in 1953. In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries. This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalisation.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! Dear Friends, Most of us are well-acquainted with this most popular holiday, commemorating the birth of Jesus, whom Christians believe to be the Messiah (or Christ/Anointed One) promised in the Hebrew Bible. ... Historians believe Jesus of Nazareth was born between 7 and 2 BCE, though the exact month and day are unknown. By the 4th century, the Western Christian church placed Christmas on December 25th, a date later adopted by most Eastern churches as well. The story of Jesus’s birth as told in scriptures includes his being born in a humble stable because his traveling parents could not find room at an inn, a star appearing over him, and angels announcing his birth to lowly shepherds in the Judean countryside. The Christian liturgical calendar observes 12 days of Christmastide, beginning on Christmas Day and culminating on Epiphany (January 6th). Epiphany (which means manifestation) celebrates the arrival of Magi or astrologers from the East to pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews, as told in scripture. In some cultures and countries, Epiphany is a bigger celebration than Christmas Day. In the 13th Century, St. Francis of Assisi created the first creche or manger scene, and some credit church reformer Martin Luther (16th Century) for popularizing the use of the Christmas tree, with its evergreen branches symbolizing the eternal life promised by Christ. May all our Christian friends have a Merry Christmas; and for all of us restful holidays and a happy, prosperous New Year! Sincerely, Translations LLC

Happy Diwali !!! Today marks the beginning of Diwali (English pronunciation: diwalee), also called Divali, Deepavali or the "Festival of Lights," a five-day religious celebration observed by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of nirvana (or enlightenment) by Mahavira, a mystic and reforme...r of Jainism in 527 BC. For Sikhs, Diwali celebrates the liberation from prison of the sixth guru, Hargobind, and 52 other princes with him, in 1619. The name "Diwali" comes from the word deepavali and translates as "row of lamps". The festival entails the lighting of small clay lamps to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Firecrackers are burst to drive away evil spirits. During Diwali, celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and parties with family members and friends. Diwali is not only celebrated in India, where more than 80 percent of the country identifies as Hindu, but throughout the world with large Hindu, Jain and Sikh populationssuch as in the South and East San Francisco Bay area. We wish our Hindu, Sikh and Jain friends a Happy Diwali !!!
