The Perfect Workout 07.01.2021

I’ve always believed in a holistic approach to health. For me, physical fitness is just as important as staying mentally and spiritually healthy. That’s why regular, traditional gyms just don’t cut it for me. They put too much emphasis on extreme weight loss or bodybuilding, and they don’t pay attention to the full, nuanced needs of the individual. So, when my neighbor told me about The Perfect Workout’s personalized program, I knew I had to give it a try. My trainers at Th...e Perfect Workout’s Mission Viejo studio set a great tone for the workouts, and made me feel at home in a place I was cared for as a whole. The trainers paid attention to my needs, and made sure I was progressing at the right pace with the right weights. ‘Slow down, shoulders back,’ they would always say to me. I think about that every time I work out, and it helps me keep the correct form. I’m a very high-energy person to begin with, and I wanted to make sure I kept that energy as I got older. And 65 I feel terrifically healthy! The Perfect Workout motivates me to maintain vibrant physical activity even when I’m not in the studio. I walk at least 10,000 steps a day, and can now easily lift myself up from behindsomething I hadn’t been able to do before. The two slow-motion strength training workouts every week give me a new burst of energy every time. I leave the workout feeling strong and wonderful. I’ve been a client at The Perfect Workout for close to 4 years now, and the people in my life have noticed many changes too-- including my doctor. He’s glad I’m doing weight-bearing exercisesit’s been great for my bone density! I’ve experienced great results, and feel like my body and my mind work in tandem at The Perfect Workout. - Nancy G. Now that Christine is without pain and she’s getting stronger and healthier, she finds she has an ever-increasing ability to function in her daily life. I can move my hips more easily. I can hold my body upright I didn't have the strength to do that. I would always slouch back over because I fatigued almost right away. One of Christine’s biggest day-to-day challenges used to be the long walk to and from the train in Chicago. ... And that's easier for me now that I can hold myself better upright while carrying a backpack. I can walk. I know that doesn’t sound like an accomplishment, but it's huge. When the first shelter at home orders were mandated, we pivoted from our in-studio personal training to online personal training. We offered immediate support to our clients and a solution to maintaining health, boosting immunity when it mattered most and having jobs for our trainers. We created an exciting new way of offering our workouts, with lots of help from our early adopters (both clients and trainers). This allowed us to develop a product and system that is our Virtua...l Training today. The first iteration of in-home training was ingenious, and helped many clients stay on track with their health and fitness goals. Since then, we have invested more time, resources and innovation into our Virtual Training Program and are excited to share the next steps with you. One key piece to our client, Christine’s strategy to feel strong in her body again was making sure she did her workouts the right way. That’s where the Trainer comes in. They’re the strategist. A Trainer will help guide you safely through each exercise as well as help reverse engineer your goals so they're more attainable. ... After all, a Trainer is someone who specializes in helping people exercise the right way and getting results and they’re passionate about it. Even more than passion, our trainers are Certified through an extensive education process. Most personal training certifications do not require any hands-on training to get certified. At The Perfect Workout, our certification goes beyond books and heavily involves hands-on training with real people. We test our trainers’ knowledge and expertise with numerous written and practical exams. All Personal Trainers are AED/CPR certified and are required to complete continuing education as part of their employment with The Perfect Workout. For four years, Christine could barely walk without experiencing excruciating pain. When you have back pain like that, you twist your body to guard from the pain and try to keep it from hurting. Unfortunately, this created a new problem for her. She found herself leaning to one size, a result of overcompensation to avoid the pain.... Christine ultimately went through surgery and a lot of physical therapy. Finally, she was pain free, but her body was out of whack and her muscles had atrophied. She couldn’t pick up where she left off with her exercise routine from four years before. She needed to begin again. Every time I tried to get back into that rhythm, I would hurt myself. I needed something in between physical therapy and full on workout classes. I needed a personal trainer. Kelly Gaynor climbed Machu Picchu in her 60’s and do you know what she did to train for it? She exercised for 20 minutes, twice a week. That’s right! The Perfect Workout 18.05.2020

Kelly climbed Machu Picchu with The Perfect Workout's help. "I was a non-believer. When I first heard about The Perfect Workout on the radio two years ago, I thought it was too good to be true. How could 20 minutes, twice a week make a difference? But I was also intrigued... ... What I didn’t know was that this workout was going to help me conquer a BIG adventure later on. So, I stopped into the Walnut Creek studio for an intro workout, and asked some tough questions about slow-motion strength training and what the average client looks like. "She looks like you," the trainers told me. Knowing that I fit into The Perfect Workout environment put me at ease, and made me confident that I could do the training. Trying slow-motion strength training on that first day was a challenge, but I faced it head-on, and I’ve been a believer ever since. One of the biggest things I was looking for in a workout was something that would keep me youthful as she got older. As one ages, you see people who are older and you know you’re going there. They can’t do things they used to do. I didn’t want that to be my future. At 61, I knew I needed to keep active. Other workouts didn’t cut it for me, and I wasn’t seeing results. But the personalized training with The Perfect Workout set me on a new path. I had never worked with a personal trainer before, and it’s been amazing having someone who’s really watching my form and looking out for me. I had torn my ACL and had three knee surgeries in the past, so safety is a priority when working out. My trainers always respond to my needs and adjust each exercise to make sure I’m not straining or hurting myself. Their care and motivation have paid off... When I started with The Perfect Workout, I could push 155 lbs. on the leg press. Today, I can push 235 lbs! I’ve also gone from 50 to 75 lbs. on the lat pulldown, and increased strength significantly on every other machine. I really felt like I’d gained strength when I traveled to Peru to climb to the famous valley of Machu Picchu. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I had never hiked before, and this is one of the toughest hikes in the world! But because of the muscle and energy I had gained from my workouts, I knew I could conquer it. A few times on the trek, my husband suggested we turn around, but I wasn’t having it. Eventually, we reached the top and it was all worth it. Ultimately, I climbed over 2,100 feetthe equivalent of climbing the Empire State Building 1.7 times. Thank you to my amazing trainers and The Perfect Workout. You helped me climb Machu Picchu! But that doesn’t get in the way of her workouts. Oh, no, trust me, don't let that fool you. She'll get on the leg press and kill it.... Know someone with Chronic Pain? READ THIS Nella’s husband had been training at The Perfect Workout and had been trying to get her into the studio. Nella has fibromyalgia and was concerned it would get in the way of exercise. But she decided to try the workout one day and fell in love with it. A symptom of fibromyalgia is chronic pain and stiffness, both of which she would experience often- even in workouts.... One day, she was on the leg press machine and stopped. She put her head down and it prompted her trainer Jeffrey to ask her if everything was okay. Then, she started to cry. She told me that, with her condition, it always feels like spinning. And she said, for a short moment, it stopped. And she can't think of the last time she felt that way. And the progress only got better. Nella used to come to her workouts using a cane, but eventually she was able to stop using it and began moving around much faster. These moments are just incredible. And one of the most incredible parts is that despite these challenges and conditions for clients like Nella, they are still able to change their lives with a 20-minute workout with a Trainer. As certified Personal Trainers, we can better serve our clients and help them reach their goals when we know what motivates them. One of trainer, Jeff Blockson's clients was a little closed off when they first began working together. She came in looking to lose weight and tone up, some very common goals with new clients. But Jeff was determined to find out her deeper motivation. After building trust, getting to know one another, and Jeff’s persistence to understand his clie...nt he finally found out why she wanted to reshape her body. She finally broke down to me. She said, ‘When I was a little girl, my father told me that I was overweight. He used to call me fat. He used to call me these names all the time. And here I am. I am 50-something years old and I'm still that same little girl.’ When you get to those moments, not only do you gain trust, but you can truly understand the client and I'm all about that. Scott is leaner than ever and out-lifting his linebacker son. I’m active, and I’ve always been active. I’m 55 and I still scuba dive, dance, bike, and travel regularly (when he can!) But I felt like I wasn’t as fit as I could be. Even though I worked out regularly at a gym, I wanted something to really push me and make me stronger. My friend who works with DEXA (which measures bone density and muscle), recommended The Perfect Workout. ... I decided to jump right in and try an intro workout at the River Oaks studio. It was a great fit! The training was tailored to my needs, and my trainer knew what machine weights would give me the maximum challenge. My trainer definitely created an inspiring environment. He’s able to push me harder than I can push myself. The personal connection is wonderful, and it transcends the usual client-trainer relationship. In my first five months of training at The Perfect Workout, I: Lost 16 lbs of fat Gained 8 lbs of muscle Lost inches, going from a 52-inch chest to a 48-inch chest It was more important for me to gain muscle than to lose a lot of weight, and that’s what I did. I turned my fat into muscle and I feel great. I’m a lot stronger now. My son is ‘Mr.Physical Fitness.’ He was a D1 linebacker in college, and is now in the Coast Guard and working toward his personal trainer certification. He noticed I had gotten a lot stronger really quickly, so he decided to try The Perfect Workout himself. After doing a few of the exercises, my son was exhausted. ‘How much does my dad do?’ he asked the trainer. ‘This IS your dad’s workout," my trainer told him. He couldn’t believe that I was lifting so much weight, and I felt really proud of myself for being able to compete with my son, who’s extremely athletic. Recently, I completed my 50th scuba dive, and having a leaner figure allowed me to wear a smaller life vest and go straight to the bottom, unlike previous dives when I was more weighed down. Being able to do what I love to the fullest extent has been the biggest benefit I have gotten from The Perfect Workout. It’s a game changer for sure. And the best part? "At 70, I needed something that would make me even stronger and tone me up. My old gym wasn’t giving me the push I needed, so I went in for an intro session at The Perfect Workout’s Pasadena studio. A complete workout in 20 minutes? I had to see it for myself. Turns out, it was exactly what I was looking for. I liked the atmosphere, and having an instructor guide me through the workouts really helped motivate me. Since starting at The Perfect Workout, I’ve seen even better r...esults than I expected. I lost 7 pounds Trimmed 5 inches off my waistline Grew stronger on all of the machines! When I first started at the Pasadena studio, I was lifting 200 lbs. on the leg press. Now I’m up to 282.5! And I love the individual attention I get from my trainer. That 1-on-1 is what keeps me coming back. You don’t have to think a lotyou just push through it. Another reason my sessions at The Perfect Workout get the most out of me because they’re only 20 minutes long. Sometimes I’m on a machine and I want to give up, but then I remember I only have a few minutes left. So I keep going, to reach muscle success! Slow-motion strength training at The Perfect Workout has given me the toned physique I wanted, and my family and friends have taken notice. People often think I’m a lot younger than I am, too. ‘I want to look like you when I’m 70!’ she often hears. But the best part about my fitness success is how it’s helped me do the things I love. I have two grandchildren4 and 2 years oldand they always want Grandma to get on the floor and play with them. That used to be too hard on my knees, but now I’m flexible enough to get down with no problem, and I’m finally able to keep up with the little ones’ energy. I needed a new way to exercise. I had been going to a bootcamp near my home for a few years, but it hadn’t made a ton of difference in my health and strength. Personal attention is very important to me, and I felt like this bootcamp experience wasn’t tailoring the workout to me at all - it was too general and didn’t focus on my body’s needs. I came upon an article that talked about the science behind The Perfect Workout and the fact that it could be done in only 20 minutes,... twice a week. After learning that the SW Fort Worth studio was right by my house, I saw it as a sign. I went in for my intro session and I was hooked. I’ve never felt safer or well informed. Nobody had ever taken care of me like this before! I found the machines to be modern and high-quality, and I appreciated that the trainer was able to adjust the settings just for me. Very quickly, I felt like my balance was better and I was less shaky, and I was gaining my strength back. Who knew that so much could happen in such little time! A huge part of my success has been my trainer. I learn a lot from him. He watches me like a hawk and makes me better. He’s tough but has a great sense of humor! Understanding the process is important to me, and my trainer is great about answering any questions I have, about which muscles are being worked and the mechanics of each exercise. In addition to my strength gains, like going from 80 to 125 lbs. on Abduction and 160 to 300 lbs. on the Leg Press, I have a lot more energy in my daily life. Which is crazy because I’m exhausted at the end of the workout, but I get energized throughout the day! I’m also sleeping better and am able to do normal tasks more easily, like getting groceries out of the trunk. Elevators and puddles used to scare me. Now I’m a lot more spatially aware and able to take on the world! Combining my workouts with better nutrition has helped me feel more confident than ever at 58. I love being able to do things easily. People take that for granted, but I’m just grateful. It still shocks me that The Perfect Workout takes such a small amount of time, but it’s so effective! - Lin R. I’ve been working out with The Perfect Workout for 20 years (as long as they’ve been in business). I started because I wanted to get in shape to fit into a bridesmaid’s dress. My good friend introduced me to The Perfect Workout. She told me it was the best thing, and I had to try it! My first trainer was Matt Hedman himself, the founder and CEO of The Perfect Workout. He showed me how I could have a full workout in just 20 minutes. That convenience is a big reason I’ve st...uck with it all these years. I was never coordinated and didn’t really like working out, although I did briefly partake in the Jazzercise craze in the 80’s. I needed something that would help me lose weight and that I wouldn’t get tired of. Slow-motion strength training did that for me! Since that first workout at the original La Jolla studio 20 years ago, I have moved a few times and worked with many different trainers and I love seeing how each trainer does things a little differently and makes sure my individual needs are met. Over the years, I’ve broken my own records on each of the machines many times and the Leg Extension is still agonizing! On both the Leg Extension and the Leg Press, I have reached over 400 lbs, up hundreds from where I started. People are constantly impressed with how fit I am for my age, and I’ve been getting stronger for two decades now. In this crazy time of coronavirus, I have started doing The Perfect Workout’s Virtual Training Program which allows me to work with my trainer from home. First she asked me what kind of equipment I had in the house. All I had was some hand weights and a foam roller, but she was able to make a full workout out of those! I’m also doing exercises against the wall and on the floor. I was skeptical that it wouldn’t work, but it’s been a great experience. I was worried I couldn’t work out with everything going on, but it ended up being easy and fun! During normal times, I enjoy walking on the beach and trying new restaurants. I hope to get back to those things soon, but in the meantime the Virtual Training Program is a great way to stay fit. I’m thankful that The Perfect Workout is always so flexible. They’ve been good to me since the start, and I’m excited to keep going! - Debby B. Workout with a Trainer, from Home! https://www.theperfectworkout.com/virtual-personal-training/

"Coronavirus won't stop me working out! I'm 68 and have been The Perfect Workout’s client for 4 years at the studios in Bethesda and Rockville, Maryland. Working out at The Perfect Workout is part of my non-retirement strategy: I want to keep this old bod on the road so I can keep making a living. I'd like to be like my dad, who is 95 and still working. I'm in the best shape of my life in no small part thanks to The Perfect Workout. One thing I've learned in growing older is... not to stop working out just because of unexpected obstacles. For instance, a while back I turned my ankle badly by stepping in a hole and had to stop using the leg press for well over a year. When I was younger that might have made me quit exercise. No longer. Instead of quitting, my trainers helped me find other leg exercises. I've had to use a number of workarounds because of injury but I haven't stopped working out. I'm grateful for the help and encouragement I've received to keep going from trainers like Morgan, Marques, Caroline, Jon-Michael and others. My current trainer, Ru, is great! The coronavirus of course is a deadly serious problem, and I'm in one of the most vulnerable age groups. There's no guarantee, but I figure if I rest properly, strive for excellent nutrition, wash my hands, maintain social distance and keep working out, even if it has to be Virtual Workouts for a while I have a better chance of fighting this virus off if I do get sick. - Tom H. You Don’t Need Much Room! Most, if not all of the exercises require little to no space. Because we don’t incorporate movements like jump squats, sprints, or tire flips, space isn’t really needed. Think about the size of our studios. The only reason they need to be as big as they are (which is not all that big) is to fit the machines in them. However, when you’re on each of those machines, you are in a static position- meaning you’re fixed in one place, not needing much space ...for movement. That goes for any slow-motion or static exercise your Trainer gives you. All you need is a space to fit the length of your body. And if you’re willing to try, we can always make more space! Objects like coffee tables and chairs are moveable and if you’ve been training with us, you’ve got muscles to move them! Keep Reading: https://www.theperfectworkout.com/vpt-fb

The Workouts Are Very Customizable The exciting thing about our Virtual Personal Training sessions is that they’re extremely customizable. In-studio workouts are customizable too but our Virtual Sessions require a high level of ingenuity to provide you with a specific program based on your goals, limitations, and the equipment you have available. Your Trainer works very hard behind the scenes to make your workouts as perfect as possible for you, and that may mean even more in...tense than expected. Need more proof? VPT is NOT Like Other At-Home Workouts You may view at-home workouts as a waste of time because the at-home workouts you’ve seen or done before didn’t work for you in the past. Our Virtual Sessions are not just at-home workouts, they’re proper Personal Training Sessions focused on you and you only.... Videos, classes, and guides can be great resources in a pinch. What you don’t get is the customized approach. You don't have someone completely focused on you to see if you’re doing an exercise correctly or safely. A video doesn’t know your goals, injuries, limitations, or how you tend to hold your breath a little before you hit muscle success. Your Trainer does. There’s just no way watching a video will ever be as effective as working with a coach in a live personal training session. Think about how hard you can be pushed when you are working with your Trainer-- it's always more than you thought you could do! Know that a video will not render that same kind of effort and certainly not the same results. In order to get the most out of your 1-2 minutes on the Ab Crunch, your coach will guide you through these four things: Full Range of Motion (and no further!): Full range of motion helps avoid shortcutting the targeted muscles. Think ribs to hips and belly button to spine to squeeze your abdominal muscles properly. Relax Your Feet and Hands: Avoid letting your hands or feet take over carrying the weight to muscle through the movement. You want the primary contraction to... live in your abdominals. The goal isn’t to get as far as you can. It’s to let the targeted muscles reach muscle success. Neck Relaxed: Try to keep the neck as static and relaxed as you can to keep the tension in your abdominal muscles and not in your neck. Muscle Success: How could we leave this out?! Achieve muscle success and thoroughly fatigue your abdominal muscles to help build your strength. Strengthen your abdominal muscles and work toward visible abs with a 20-minute workout. The abs are most known because of the six pack. A six pack has that appearance because of connective tissue. As the abs flow from the ribs to the pelvic girdle, there are three segments of connective tissue in the middle. This where the six pack gets its upper, middle, and lower portions. Also, a sheet of connective tissue (linea alba) runs vertically, splitting the abs in half and causing it to look like there are six muscles instead of three.... Secondary muscles in the ab crunch are the external and internal obliques. The obliques are located in the area that many refer to as their love handles. (We’re covering all of the fun stuff today!) What are you actually working when you do the Ab Crunch!? n The rectus abdominis, or abs, are the muscles many of us would like to display in a bathing suit. Besides the aesthetics, they’re an important muscle group for function.... The Ab Crunch machine trains the abs as well as another pair of important muscles. However, performing this exercise requires attention to detail. There’s a small difference between proper execution and lower back strain with the ab crunch. The rectus abdominis starts at the bottom of the sternum (chest bone) and the front of the ribs. It runs down to the top of your pubic bone (part of the pelvic girdle), which is just above your genitals. The main function of this muscle is to pull your spine into a ‘C’ shape, bringing your chest and midsection closer together.
