Last week, the Los Altos Hills Open Space Committee sponsored a presentation on home fire hardening and vegetation management in the wildland urban interface (WUI). Fire is a natural and beneficial element in California’s ecosystem. Learn how to fire harden your home to reduce risk of damage for homes built in or near wildlands. Please see the message below from County of Santa Clara Public Health Department Santa Clara County residents are encouraged to check in frequently with older adults and those with chronic conditions who are especially vulnerable to the heat, including family, friends and neighbors. If you see someone who may be experiencing distress due to the heat, please call 911. All residents are encouraged to take heat safety measures including the following: 1. Drink plenty of water a...nd beverages containing electrolytes even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar because they will speed up fluid loss. 2. Limit physical activity during peak heat hours of 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 3. Never leave people or pets in a closed, parked car. 4. Cool off by taking a bath or shower. 5. Wear light weight, light colored, and loose fitting clothing can help you keep cool. 6. Do not bundle babies or put them in heavy clothing. 7. Wear a wide-brimmed, vented hat or use an umbrella when outdoors. 8. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. 9. Rest often and find shady places to cool down when outdoors. 10. Check on family, friends, or neighbors often. 11. People taking medications should take extra precautions to stay out of the heat as certain drugs such as stimulants can increase body core temperature, and with expected hot weather this week, may predispose individuals to hyperthermia. The State is requiring regions that reach 15% ICU capacity to implement a temporary Stay-at-Home Order. Bay Area Health Officers jointly announced that they wi...ll not wait until hospital capacity reaches that critical point and will implement the Orders starting December 6. Lack of ICU capacity means that you and your loved ones may not receive the care you need if you fall seriously illwith COVID or otherwise. At this time, the event appears to be strong and widespread with the highest probability of PSPS encompassing areas and adjacent terrain of the northe...rn and western Sacramento Valley, Northern and Central Sierra as well as higher terrain of the Bay Area, including the Santa Cruz Mountains, Central Coast Region and portions of southern Kern. Recently, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) passed new regulations for utilities to expand the minimum vegetation clearances and enhance the fire safety of overhead power lines in areas identified as High Fire-Threat Districts. These new standards: Apply to areas with an elevated or extreme risk of wildfires Increase the vegetation clearance around power lines from 18 inches to 48 inches in the High Fire-Threat Districts Provide recommended clearances a...t time of pruning to maintain minimum clearance throughout the year May require work on trees not previously managed by our Vegetation Management Program May involve some tree removal to maintain minimum clearances and ensure public safety.
