With the current fires It’s important to be mindful of the dangers of Valley Fever. A personal story about VF: After the Thomas Fire my son Jesse flew in to help us, we spent days putting out flair ups, fires still burning on the property and of course sifting. We all wore masks in fact I was pretty strict about this with anyone on the property. Within days it started with a cough, fever and thinking we all just had colds for Jesse it turned to severe fevers and cough an...d then the rash developed and there was no doubt that he had Valley Fever. Doctor visits were frustrating at best as they continued to misdiagnose this as pneumonia even when we handed the doctor the checklist of symptoms. Lost blood work and more misdiagnoses. Finally they listened. Xrays were taken showing a large fungus ball in his lungs and he was immediately hospitalized. This is the hard part to actually say out loud. My son who came to help, who is one of the greatest people I know and my world almost died. Weeks in the hospital, weekly visits by the infectious dieses specialties and a life of taking medication. This is Valley Fever. Please share this, tell your affected friends and insist that anyone going back on their property please wear the masks it could save you or a family members life. What is valley fever? Valley fever, or coccidioidomycosis, is an infection caused by a fungus. You can get the infection if you breathe in the fungus germs. The germs are found in soil and dust that has been stirred up by fires and other causes. What are the signs and symptoms of valley fever? You may develop the following flu-like symptoms 1 to 4 weeks after you breathe in the fungus: Cough or trouble breathing Fever, chills, or night sweats Chest, joint, or muscle pain Tiredness or headache A rash (this is a clear indicator that you have Valley Fever) Tender, swollen, red lumps on your legs Loss of appetite or weight loss I hate to tell you this but most doctors misdiagnose Valley Fever. It is often diagnosed as phenomena or bronchitis. If you think you might have take control of your health and demand a blood test and chest x-ray. Do not wait, as it can be deadly. Blood tests may show the fungus that causes valley fever. Ask for this specific test it looks for Coccidioides antibodies or antigens A sample from your throat or the inside of your nose may be needed. You may need to cough mucus into a cup. An x-ray may show signs of infection, such as swelling and fluid around your lungs or a fungus ball in the lungs A lung biopsy may be done to test for signs of a fungal infection. Lung tissue is removed and sent to a lab for tests. Here is a great article on precautionary measures you can take. https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/valleyfever/prevention.html Also, please keep in mind. Pets can be affected by the dust and ash in many ways. Written by Kat Merrick
