HORSE HEALTH TOPIC- Controlling insects in your horse’s environment is vital for their safety and comfort. Not only are insects a direct irritant to you horse, causing skin damage and sores, but they are also vectors for disease. ~Good management is key in controlling insects in your barn. ~Ensure manure is moved promptly and as far away from the stables as possible. ~Mow tall grasses to discourage insects from hiding in shady grass.... ~Bring horses inside at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes gather. ~Ensure your horse is equipped with a fly mask and fly sheet with belly guard to act as a physical barrier. Horse Health Topic: Summer is approaching and the warm weather is already upon us. Here are some guidelines to remember as you enjoy the summer riding season with your horse: #1 Hydration: Bring water from home when traveling, as some horses are picky about unfamiliar-tasting water, or acclimate your horse to water flavored with a little apple juice or Gatorade ahead of time. ... #2 Heat exhaustion: Other risk factors for overheating include obesity or poor fitness, heavy muscling or a dark coat. If a horse is exhausted or very hot, offer one gallon of water every 15 minutes until he has had his fill. #3 Sun protection: Human sunscreen that does not contain para-aminobenzoic acid is generally safe for use on horses on small areas of the body. Long-term ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure can predispose horses with pink skin around their eyes to cancer, so get UV-blocking flymasks for these animals. #4 Trailering safety: If your horse develops a cough or fever within a few days of a long trailer ride, call your veterinarian. And if the weather is hot, open all vents and windows (with appropriate bars in place), and never park your trailer in the sun for an extended period with horses inside. #5 Infectious disease: Airborne virus particles, such as respiratory-disease-causing influenza, can travel more than 100 feet to infect other horses, so avoiding nose-to-nose contact is not always enough for preventing infection. Some diseases, such as strangles, also pass from apparently healthy carriers, usually via shared equipment, direct contact or human hands or clothing. #6 First aid: Know in advance the most direct route to an equine surgery center in case you need to transport the horse. Many accidents can be prevented by taking the time to evaluate your horse’s environment and removing potential hazards.

HORSE HEALTH TOPIC: Cold Weather Tips Water: Adequate water consumption is an important factor in preventing certain types of colic. Decreased water consumption is thought to be the primary predisposing factor for impaction colic, especially in the winter when most horses drink less water. Optimum water temperature for maximum palatability is 45-65F. Horses tend to consume less if it falls outside this range, making them more prone to poor digestion efficiency, dehydration, ...and intestinal impactions. They also consume the most water within 3 hours of a meal. So it is best to top off water buckets right before feeding. Manure Output: The average horse produces approximately 50lbs of manure per day. It is important to be familiar with your horses average manure output and consistency. If they begin producing smaller piles of dryer manure or less piles in a day, these can be signs of an impending impaction. To ensure your horse is getting adequate hydration, you can offer soupy mashes to increase their water intake. A mash can be made by simply adding water to their regular ration of grain or you can make a mash using bran. See more
