Topanga Creek Outpost 25.12.2020

Just before @jay.barre landed in Topanga many moons back to start his tenure we came across an article describing him as Gravel Jesus. He was seen on the gravel roads of The Midwest on a fixed gear seemingly floating through the land. Naturally once he arrived in Topanga we had a habanero mustard made in his name. Jay opened his own shop named @_you.bet_ up north in Grass Valley, CA and we had another batch of mustard brewed up with a few dozen for You Bet! and a couple dozen for @topangacreek - Stop by if you miss Jay and want to at least splash some mustard on a ham sandwich in his name. We did today. #haberneromustard #graveljesus

Want to scoop in and snag the misfortune of others? We have a size large @surlybikes Karate Monkey that we held off for someone who didn’t get it under the tree. Up for grabs. It is the suspension fork version. We doubt it will last long and nobody is on the list waiting.

Our community means the world to us and sharing post ride stories over food and drink has long been part of our culture and raison d’être. Chances are fairly significant you have been offered some banana bread and coffee if you have visited us in Topanga. Boy have we missed our shop family after a Saturday ride sitting in the Adirondack chairs with a relaxed post ride calm this year. We are so looking forward to those days again. Happy New Year and here’s to looking forward to some future banana bread chats!!!

Remember that @surlybikes Ogre we custom built and highlighted last week? We are happy to report it found an excellent home with Chancellor on the last day of the year. All set for new beginnings. So stoked to send out adventure bikes because we know the world is about to explode with UnPredicted Journeys. So happy for Chancellor to have some. #newbikeday

@reeveswoodcraft - Reeve has spent the past couple weeks bringing the wooden kayak back to life. A month or two ago he casually mentioned we should brighten up the old gal. We suggested he make that happen. Boy are we stoked. Thanks old friend. If you have a project like this give him a shout.

Keeping 20/20 in hindsight. Celebrating the genesis of a new year. #happynewyear2021 ( @1924us drew this for us many years ago. Christian )

Latif ‘s timing for his new @pivot_cyclesusa today coincided with our new roof being installed. Thanks buddy. We really really appreciate that you spent your money at our small business today. . It’s our shop family like Latif that have kept us going for the past twenty plus years with a roof over our heads. Literally a roof today. When you shop local it really does keep our community stronger. We hired local roofers for the job. This is how it works and we appreciate everyone and everything. We particularly appreciate days like this when we send out a @pivot_cyclesusa and upgrade the shop.

If you have been on a Saturday ride with us for the past 3 years you probably experienced us stopping for a moment of culture. Probably a poem. Boy do we miss those rides and moments. In the spirit of community we are hoping to throw together a video and want as much help as we can get. Video yourself reciting all or part of this post and tag us or email it to us so we can put something together. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost..... Whose woo...ds these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Do you think that Los Angeles is the land of photo shoots and imagery? Think we are always on our game in case the paparazzi shows up? Even at a bike shop? Well, you’d be right. While @maxtwopoint0 and @bigglp were wrenching today a professional photographer was capturing the scene. Rest assured @rover_shopdog was also photographed. The duo was also photographed working on som @roguejourneymen projects. Stay tuned. Expecting the article to publish in a week or so.

What do adventure bike shops that have a side leather crafting operation in the middle of their cabin do on Sunday mornings for their Christmas card you probably never wondered? We take the kayak down along with our landscaping designer’s surf board to Malibu for a fun morning. Still smiling.

Alex is our actual neighbor in Topanga and like many people he had no idea what was behind our fence even after living next to us for a while. He was given advise on getting a @surlybikes from us not even realizing we sell bikes and was being aimed to his literal neighbor up the creek. Today was a blast getting him on a Surly Packrat. We are stoked to adventure with our neighbor and now great friend. #neighborhood #topangacanyon #topanga #newbikeday #unpredictyourwednesday

Smiles in every direction this morning. We have had a wooden kayak hanging out front of the Outpost for so many years we lost track. Never pulled it down and thought it was about to go the way of a plant box. However our new landscaping designer has other plans for live plants and @revz found himself on a mission to make her seaworthy. @reeveswoodcraft brought new life with some art to the kayak and Shazam we were ready for a holiday photo by the Pacific Ocean this morning. Just about all of us took a turn paddling out. A couple capsizing and a super fun morning. #kayaking #fun #pacificocean #malibu

The @surlybikes Troll. We freaking love this bike and so did Mike when he stopped by in case we had this amazing adventure bike. We had a hunch earlier on the year that a bike shortage might be worse than anyone could have imagined. We don’t a lot of space but had enough for some of our favorites including a handful of Trolls. It is such a great everyday everything every adventure bike. So beyond stoked that Mike is able to ride out with a new Surly. For anyone curious about still getting a Surly Troll and other bikes, head up to Topanga. We still have some. We worked so hard on Rogue Journeymen in September that a handful of bikes sat in boxes. You’d be surprised. #newbikeday

Need a reason to vote besides the million already swirling in your mind? Voting in LA just reached a pinnacle. #vote And you live in LA County, all the polling locations are open to everyone so you might as well head up here to Topanga and vote at the best polling spot in the USofA. Repost @themountainmermaidintopanga The Mountain Mermaid’s Bill Buerge and Gail McDonald-Tune will host an L.A. County polling place in the great room of the 7,000-square-foot home. { Click the link in bio to read the @latimes article } (Brian van der Brug / Los Angeles Times)

For the past 5/6 years we have been making a whole slew of leather goods available at the outpost. At a time that good humanity makes such an impact It warmed our hearts when the extraordinary human @chris_naum stopped for bike repairs and Rogue Journeymen gifts using a @roguejourneymen wallet he has been carrying for a few years. Our community is phenomenal made up of some spectacular people.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!! These two showed up for dad’s new @surlybikes Troll and once they knew a surprise #newbikeday Surly could happen for mom, the plan hatched immediately. Really wish we could see mom’s face because it was as her actual birthday. In a period of time when the news and world can see so gloomy, this was the best of the best of the best!!!!! #happybirthdaymom

What a fun photo from 2013 !!!! Are you in the shop family photo? Do you remember that day? Back in the times of group photos.

Topanga Creek Outpost 06.07.2020

If your friends were all going on a bike tour across Oregon and you were invited would you join? What if you’ve never ridden that far before? What if you didn’t even own a freakin bike?!? Basically I just described the position that Crawford here was in. And I’m sure you can use context to figure out the decision he made. Happy new bike day man, we know that disc trucker is up to the task at hand so now it’s up to you to lay down the miles! Have fun and take some sweet pics while you’re up there

What a blast. We were able to take a group of youth out of a group home for a mountain bike ride In Cheesebro and an amazing time was had by all. For the past 15 plus years we have rewarded kids in group homes and jails for good behavior. Right now, we don’t even care if they are being good or not. We feel they deserve the same outdoor activities as all kids so we grab our fleet of rental bike, pack them up with some volunteers and take a bunch of disadvantaged kids biking. The best kind of day.

Champions!! Not only did all of these fine folk conquer the hills of Topanga, but they decided to do so during a crazy heat wave! Thank you all for your great attitudes and positivity. Doing our loop is no easy endeavor, especially in the heat. Over the last couple of weeks the number of people who gave up and turned around (not pictured) was quite high, and we cannot blame them for doing so. It takes some real grit to earn these certificates so once again, thank you and congrats
