E-620 Grace Yokely Middle School November 8-10, 2014 Day 1 The students of Grace Yokely Middle arrived bright and early and ready for some fun. We started out the day by leaving Rainbow Harbor and heading for the Angel's Gate. Along the way we learned a bit about oceanography and stopped to see some sea lions that had jumped on a buoy to sun themselves. As we went through Angel's Gate and out into the ocean, we had some lessons about how to safely handle lines aboard the bo...at and we set the Super Seven sails. After a delicious lunch, we learned about navigation on the sea, some knot tying, and how to drive the boat, as well as spending some time hanging out in the headrig, the net at the front of the boat. We also saw some fin whales and some common dolphins. After striking sails and anchoring at Doctor's Cove, near Emerald Bay, we climbed aloft on the fore mast for our up and overs. Then it was time for dinner, after which we all gathered at the stern to lift our voices at Chantey Night! Day 2 We started out the day with a huge turnout for our polar bear plunge, followed by breakfast. Then a friendly surfer came to teach us about how to put on a wet suit so that we could go for our first snorkel! We snorkeled at Indian Rock, swimming all the way across Emerald Bay to get there. Along the way we saw sand dollars, garibaldis, blacksmiths, kelp bass, kelp fish, snails, and abalones, amongst other animals. After returning to the Tole we had lunch and set our sails, this time it was the Super Seven as well as the Lower and Upper Tops'ls. Then we all gathered in the mess where Peter Pan and his shadow taught us how to tie a traditional sailor's bracelet, the Turk's Head. Towards the end we took a break to check out some Risso's dolphins that had come to visit the boat. Once that was all done struck our sails and anchored at Toyon Bay. After dinner, we went ashore to visit the labs there, where we got to pet some sharks and rays, look at lots of cool fishes, and hold some invertebrates. Day 3 After another great polar bear plunge, we had some breakfast while the crew moved the boat over to White's Landing. Then we went for a snorkel at Guano Rock where we saw countless fish of many types. The water was so clear that even in 30 feet of depth it felt like we could reach down and touch the bottom. After the snorkel we got underway again and set our Super Seven sails to make our way back to Long Beach. Along the way we saw some common dolphins and we had a class to learn about marine mammals. Fair winds, students of Grace Yokely! We'll miss you.

Turns out Open Classroom can set all of the Super Seven sails in less than 40 seconds! Truly amazing!
Open Classroom! We had an amazing three days out at sea; I can’t believe it flew by so fast! Day 1: Today was a packed day, full of some really amazing things. We set off bright and early Wednesday morning, with the warmth of the sun in our faces, and the cool breeze at our back. Just as we got aboard, we set the burgee up to flutter in the wind, and guide our course throughout our trip. Right as we left Angel’s Gate, we ran into a sizable pod of common dolphins, before w...Continue reading
Yesterday Captain Snark took his aquacopter out for a spin while the students of Open Classroom climbed aloft. We put together this video for your enjoyment. https://vimeo.com/user22983414/review/111131884/a6164749bb
So far we've been having an amazing trip with our Open Classroom friends. We saw a great pod of dolphin and a humpback whale on our way across to Isthmus Cove.
