Happy Juneteenth -- a day of recognition, restoration and celebration. On June 19, 1865 nearly nine decades after our Nation’s founding, and more than 2 years... after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free from bondage. As those who were formerly enslaved were recognized for the first time as citizens, Black Americans came to commemorate Juneteenth with celebrations across the country, building new lives and a new tradition that we honor today. "Juneteenth not only commemorates the past. It calls us to action today."

Take a moment eight minutes to be exact to listen and see first-hand the experiences of how COVID-19 has impacted the South Los Angeles community. Scientifically, the virus does not discriminate; however, 61% of 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 are African Americans. They are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, spouses, partners, siblings, colleagues, and friends. We breathe the same air, so why am I the only one getting it? And the people who look like me are getting it. Ki...ya Johnson. T.H.E. Health and Wellness Centers is honored to participate in Direct Relief’s video "Fighting to Breathe," directed and edited by Oliver Riley-Smith and produced by Noah Smith. Join our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Derrick Butler, and Dr. Khadijah Lang, president, Golden State Medical Association, as they explore the history of healthcare in the African American communities and what they are doing to change the mindset and offer care to those impacted most by COVID-19.
