In episode 4, hosts Erika Phillips, James Pillar and Niki Martinez, are joined by guest Eric Maserati-E Abercrombie, Musical Artist, and Formerly Incarcerated Citizen, to explore responding to injustice - especially through music - using William Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale'. We reach the dramatic climax of ‘The Winter’s Tale’ as we enter Hermione’s trial. But what good is saying you’re innocent when you’re only heard as guilty? Our journaling examines the difference b...etween what we know to be true inside ourselves and how we’re perceived. And what better way to respond to injustice in our world than with art that functions as a call to action? Eric Maserati-E Abercrombie thrills us with his music as a response to this moment in the play and in the world. Eric Maserati-E Abercrombie is a music artist, film maker, and justice reform activist. Eric was released from San Quentin State Prison in August of 2019 after serving 9 years in prison. While incarcerated Eric was a part of a restorative justice pilot program currently implemented in San Joaquin county. He was featured several times on the podcast ‘Ear Hustle’. He has also worked as a film maker for a media project in San Quentin State Prison called ‘Firstwatch’, where he and team of incarcerated men created films geared towards humanizing incarcerated people. Since released Eric has spoken at the State Capitol and worked with the Restorative justice organization Re:Store Justice. He was featured in the Emmy nominated Documentary Q-Ball, and did a tour with Antwan Banks Williams performing music and telling his story at schools. Eric is currently a full time professional recording artist and an executive producer of the album tentatively titled The Represent Justice Album, working alongside other formerly incarcerated people and artists such as J. Cole, Common, and Alicia keys. Eric plans to change the world by changing the way people view the world.

Next Word Up!’s guest is artist Mason Conrad with San Diego guest Reanne Acasio! What is ‘Battling Monsters’ you may be wondering? Well, let’s just say there will be fangs, monsters, and a lot of fun! Mason Conrad is an actor, poet, sculptor, creator, and fantastical mess. He recently grabbed his MFA from The Old Globe/USD Shiley Graduate Program. You’ve seen him onstage at the Old Globe as Silvius in ‘As You Like It’, Paris in ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and Andrew Aguecheek i...n ‘Twelfth Night’. But more importantly, Conrad loves making and playing with puppets. He watches anime with his breakfast; he holds fake swords and loves making up monologues in his mirror; he loves action figures; and he loves the silliest parts of himself. Reanne Acasio (she/her) is an NYC-based actor and theatre practitioner passionate about inclusivity, diversity, anti-racism, and mental health. Acasio’s regional work includes The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Repertory Theatre, San Diego Musical Theatre, The Barn Stage Company, Asian Story Theatre, and OnStage Playhouse.
