Prior to Covid-19, 5 million Americans were unemployed, and the unemployment rate was 3.5%. Today, we are 7.6 million jobs short compared to before the recession. Together, that sums to 12.6 million. However, today 9.3 million Americans are unemployed. That means 3.3 million persons have dropped out of the labor force (some to collect Social Security), thereby reducing the official unemployment rate from 7.8% to 5.8%. Please come back!

This Sunday is Mother's Day in the USA. It was founded by Ann Jarvis, and first celebrated here in 1908. Sunday Gospel Between 3/1/20 and 8/8/20, households hunkered down and stockpiled food. Among canned vegetables and beans, mixed vegetable sales increased the most, 62.4% Year Over Year to $94 million. Next, kidney beans with growth of 60.2% to $95 million, followed by peas that saw revenues jump 57.4% to $92 million, then chickpeas/garbanzos that bounced 57.1% to $63 million. In fifth, tomatoes with 56.1% growth pushing sales to $422 million.

Graduate enrollment rose by 2.7%, compared to a 0.9% rise in 2019. Covid-19 is forcing a rethink on largely resistant higher education institutions.

In 1973, publicly traded firms accounted for 41.4% of total non-farm payroll employment. That percentage was just 29% in 2019. Why? Counting Covid Through 4/15/20, positive Covid-19 tests were 20% of all tests, but testing was very limited. From 4/15/20-6/15/20 as testing jumped from 150,000/day to 500,000/day the percentage of positives steadily declined to 4%. However, from mid-June through mid-July infection rates doubled to 8%, while tests/day steadily rose to 700,000. Since then, testing has flat lined and the infection rate has slowly declined to 6%. Still more than I'd like to see, but the trend is good.
