New Ad-Based Tracking Scheme Discovered A group of security researchers from the University of Washington published a study in which they indicated several techniques that enable attackers to track a user’s location using relatively inexpensive resources, namely mobile ads. The study (which will be published in full later this month) does not show a new loophole or previously undetected bug; rather, it shows the current unconcern for privacy matters that permeate a significan...t amount of the mobile advertising networks used today. During the trials, the researchers spent USD 1,000 (EUR 843) on an undisclosed demand-side platform (DSP) such as Facebook, Google AdWords, MediaMath, Centro, or Simpli.fi which gave them access to criteria-specific controls such as the locations where the ad appears, in which apps, and for which phone identifiers. With these tools, they were able to follow a smartphone user within a range of about 25ft (7.2m) and pinpoint some key locations such as their home and office, as well as knowing which apps the user was accessing. We assesses it unlikely that this security concern will be addressed in the near to medium term. The measures that would be needed to ensure users’ safety would make advertising less target-oriented; by extension, it would make it more challenging to adapt publicity to a specific audience. Further, the researchers did not specify which particular DSP was used during the trials as they found that all the most popular ones are equally intrusive, making this an industry-wide problem. We recommend clients identify which ad-supported apps they use and to consider upgrading to the premium ad-free version to somewhat diminish the possibility of ad-powered spying.

Identity Theft Reaching Epidemic Levels According to media reports on August 23, 2017, identity theft has reached an epidemic level, hence, making online financial assets, and personal and professional information, more vulnerable. According to the report, an anti-fraud organization recorded 89,000 cases in the first six months of the year, which is a 5% increase from cases recorded in 2016. This is a new record high. Most victims of online-identity theft are aged 30-40 be...cause most of their information is stored online. Furthermore, the report claims that victims of this activity are unaware of having been targeted till receiving a random bill or their credit rating has fallen. Due to the growing vulnerability of the cyber-domain, online criminal activity seems to have become easier and less detectable. With individuals and companies depending largely on e-banking and e-commerce, TL Security Solutions finds that financial assets are the most susceptible to being compromised. Furthermore, criminals engaging in fraud target data such as names, addresses, date of birth, and bank account details. We assess that this kind of activity also has security implications for companies. If an individual is victimized by identity theft, there is a likely chance that cyber-criminals can trace a link to the individual’s employers. TL Security Solutions recommends that clients, on an individual as well as an organizational level, update their computers’ firewall and anti-spyware. Information released on social media platforms should also be reviewed to avoid easy access by cyber-criminals. Furthermore, we recommend clients use passwords for online portals and activities that are changed regularly, use strong passwords, never use obvious figures, and never repeat the same password twice.
