Do you know when to lower your little ones crib mattress? ***According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) you should lower the crib mattress when your baby is starting to sit up independently.*** Your crib should be a safe environment. One of the most common injuries associated with cribs, (even though they are the easiest to prevent) is falls. ... Children are more likely to fall out of the crib when the crib mattress is raised too high. Young children are truly top heavy. The decision to move your child from a crib into a bed is a big one! Time it right and all is good but get the timing wrong and all can go awry. Here are 3 signs your child might be ready to make the big move. 1. Your child has NO current sleep issues! If your child has sleep issues, transitioning from a crib into a bed will likely make the situation worse. So before taking the plunge, I strongly suggest that you fix the existing sleep issues first. If you need help fixin...g your child’s sleep problems, Tiny Treasures Newborn Care and Consulting is here to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, it’s never too late to create healthy sleep habits for your child! 2. Your child has celebrated their 3rd birthday. I urge you to wait until your child reaches the age of 3. Take away the physical boundaries too soon, and this could be a recipe for disaster, for even the best of sleepers. Most children under 3 are just not developmentally ready. They simply do not have the developmental capacity to understand the concept You need to stay in bed, they still require the physical boundaries of the crib walls to help them do so. 3. Your child is asking for a big bed. Don’t feel pressured to move your child out of their crib by a certain age. I promise, your child will not bring their crib to college. If your child is still happily sleeping in a crib, (even if they have reached the magical age of 3) WAIT until they ask to move to a bed. Provided of course, they still meet the height and weight limits for their crib.
