As the end of 2020 approaches, the Timpany Center would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. While the site remains closed for member safety, the County has been taking advantage of our vacancy and upgrading multiple aspects of the center. In the last few months, we have received new floors and paint in the locker rooms, new carpet in staff offices and restrooms, an updated reception area, new ventilation in staff and member spaces, upgraded electronics... that control our pool and spa, and lighting upgrades. The most exciting project so far is the current plan to drain and resurface the pool and the spa. For those who want to continue to stay active, we currently offer virtual programs, including fitness classes for all abilities, monthly wellness programs, and virtual personal training. Email [email protected] if you are interested in any of these services. January schedule will include free classes on 1/6 and 1/7 and new classes starting the week of 1/11. Check back here for an update as to the schedule. Lastly, our holiday break is from 12/24-1/4/2021- we will have limited access to email during this time. Happy Holidays! We are looking forward to a successful and healthy 2021!

Here is some information regarding stress management for anyone who is struggling with it during these trying times. Stress Management: Is making changes that allow us to manage stressful situations. When it comes to stress there are 2 types; Eustress and distress. Eustress is positive stress like getting a bachelor's degree, while distress is negative stress. Getting a bachelor's degree is an example of positive stress but some things that come with it like failing a course... can be distress. An example of distress is losing a job. Stress management is a way to gain skills that help you manage stressful situations. Stress affects our bodies, mind, emotions, and behavior. Having good strategies to cope with stress can benefit your mental and physical health, additionally, it can better the quality of sleep, help maintain a social life, and overall increase your quality of life. There are many and different ways people manage and cope with stress. A great tip for managing stress is maintaining time management to help you stay organized and feel less overwhelmed. Other tips are eating healthier, staying active, meditating, journaling, interacting with others, and even incorporating some "me-time" into our lives. Overall, doing things we enjoy doing is also one of the easier ways to reduce stress, so if you want to go to the beach or listen to music take the time to do that. Here are some great resources that can help manage stress:Application: Headspace: Meditation & Sleep App https://www.headspace.com/ See more

It’s hard to believe that we are headed straight for September! Lots of challenges this month as COVID continues and our air quality declines from the various fires across CA, but we keep moving forward! We do not have any re-opening dates, but we are still offering programming to keep our community moving. Please scroll down to read about our new interns, new website and September Zoom fitness schedule :) Welcome Interns Many of you know I have been doing this alone sinc...e July, but with the start of the Fall semester, I have been able to bring on 15-20 interns to help with the classes and projects They come from various departments across SJSU and many of you have already seen them in our classes. COVID has impacted their ability to find internships and I am proud and honored to be able to help them learn and grow during this unprecedented time. Luckly, one of these interns is someone you and I already know. Carina Rodriguez-Tsai is a Master’s student at SJSU and has been able to do her internship with us this Fall (I am so happy to have her back). She will be taking over some of the classes and mentoring the interns along the way. With the influx of interns, members are also being given the opportunity to work one on one with our students for the semester. If you are interested in working with a student for the entire semester (September- December) and can commit to meeting with them twice per week please email [email protected] New Website On another positive note, the Timpany Center has a brand new website. I have been working hard to update it as it was redesigned at the beginning of COVID and not everything is completely correct. Check it out: https://www.sjsu.edu/timpany/index.php September Class Enrollment Enrollment for September classes is open now. The classes have not changed since August and the class list and descriptions can now be found here: https://www.sjsu.edu/timpany/programs/land-fitness.php Costs will remain the same at $40 for one class and $60 for 2 or more classes. Please email me directly to enroll. [email protected] I hope you are all staying safe. We are all anxious to get back to the pool and as soon as I know anything I will be sure to let you know!

As the Country sees progress in fighting COVID-19, we have a long way to go to get back to a new normal. In trying to keep our membership active and healthy we are exploring ways that we can provide services remotely. As a non-profit, self-service program we also need to change our business structure slightly to support the dedicated staff that keeps the Timpany Center running. In an effort to explore these options, we are asking that all clients, no matter what program you generally participate in (classes, memberships, swim lessons etc.) complete this online survey. https://sjsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0rBbHeAyMVfOq9f The TC Staff misses all of you and are eager to continue to provide the best services possible during this unprecedented time.

Now that Santa Clara County has been asked to shelter in place, the re-opening date of the Timpany Center has been changed to April 8th 2020. To this date, there still have been no reported or confirmed cases of COVID-19 from the center. While most of you rely on the pool for your health and fitness needs, we encourage you to consider your activity levels during this time. The National Institute on Aging has put together a variety of online fitness activities that can be do...ne in the safety of our homes. These exercises, while designed for older adults, can help those of all ages and abilities stay active especially when fitness and recreation centers are closed for social distancing. https://go4life.nia.nih.gov We also encourage you to reach out to friends and family during this time. Social distancing is vital for us right now, but the risk for social isolation is present. Call a neighbor or a friend! Use the internet to video chat with family! Email someone you haven’t touched base with in a while! Find a way to connect to one another and keep active. We will continue to implement the CDC guidelines and will continue to follow the guidelines of the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health and the guidelines of the California Department of Public Health for cleaning and sanitizing the entire center. Taking these measures will ensure your safety and also make the workplace safer for those who need to be onsite. Once we resume operations, memberships will be extended and refunds will be given for all appropriate programs. Due to the fluid nature of this situation, please be aware that the new re-opening date is subject to change and members will be notified. For the most up to date information on the virus please visit: https://www.sccgov.org///novel-coronavirus/Pages/home.aspx The status of the Timpany center closure will be updated regularly through email messages, and updates on the SJSU Research Foundation and Timpany websites. The protection and care of the Timpany Center family, their families, our partners and patrons are our top priorities and critical to our success. We greatly appreciate your understanding, patience, and support. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Jennifer Schachner at [email protected]. As an institution that caters to the health and wellness of our community, we must take reasonable and educated precautions to reduce the potential of person to person transmission of COVID-19. The Timpany Center and SJSU Research Foundation have been closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19 within Santa Clara County. Although, currently there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the Timpany Center, we must make every effort to protect our community, thus in consultat...ion with the County of Santa Clara, Timpany Center operations will be temporarily shut down from Wednesday, March 11th through and including Friday, March 20th. We currently plan to reopen on Saturday, March 21st. While we understand that this may be an inconvenience to many of you, we aim to foster decisions that prioritize the health and safety of the Timpany Community as a whole. We will continue to implement the CDC guidelines and will continue to follow the guidelines of the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health and the guidelines of the California Department of Public Health for cleaning and sanitizing the entire center.
