The Webb Schools is sad to share the news that beloved faculty member, author and playwright Brian Rogers passed away last week due to brain cancer. Mr. Rogers joined Webb 10 years ago and quickly became an admired member of the faculty. We will remember him for being charmingly funny, full of sharp wit, and truly dedicated to his students. Anyone who knew him appreciated Mr. Rogers’s wide-ranging, curious mind that challenged the conventional thought of his students and colleagues. Please keep his family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Congratulations to Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology Outreach Coordinator Gabriel-Philip Santos, who was named a 2021 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow on Feb. 9 for his creative use of cosplay and pop-up museums to bring since to diverse communities! The Webb Schools joined the City of Claremont and communities throughout the country in a solemn memorial tribute to the victims of COVID-19 by ringing the Vivian Webb Chapel bells at 5:30pm this evening. As we look toward a brighter future in 2021, we must pause and reflect on those we've lost in our families, in the extended Webb community, and around the world. The pandemic has profoundly affected our lives and how we act within it. Show your commitment to the community by following COVID-19 protocols: wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands, and get vaccinated when it is available for you.
We have some exciting news from the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology: http://bit.ly/FarkeLofgrenAlf2021 "After nearly 30 years with Webb, Don Lofgren, Ph.D., director of the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology will leave his position and transition to director emeritus on July 1, 2021. In his new role next year, Lofgren will continue to teach, conduct research, and provide counsel to museum staff. Andrew Farke, Ph.D., currently the Augustyn Family Curator, director of research and collections at the Alf Museum, has been appointed the new director, only the fourth individual to hold this position since the museum’s founding in the late 1930s."
Today we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and reflect upon Dr. King's vision for our country and fellow Americans. The Webb Schools coincides its biennial Honor Symposium Days with MLK Day in order to offer special academic programming to our students. This year's focus is on anti-racism and it's intersection with honor. Sunday's Chapel speaker was Mr. Kahlil Green, a senior at Yale College studying the History of Social Change and Social Movements and the first Black ...student body president at Yale. The community heard from Mr. Green on his efforts to advocate for youth in politics, institute education reform, and comprehensive racial justice throughout the country. Monday's programming will feature a panel of Webb Alumni on what honor has meant to them in their time after Webb, and students will participate in a workshop in which they will discuss honor in the context of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism. These workshops will also serve as a closing to the community read of Ibram X. Kendi's How to be An Antiracist. Rest and rejuvenate during this holiday season, and gear up for our march together out of this pandemic and to the other side, where our future is bright indeed. Laudate Deum, one and all,... Research shows that a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment is critical to student success and a marker of educational excellence. One crucial component in creating such an environment is having a diverse faculty and staff that reflects the beautiful mosaic of students we teach. As such, we are excited to announce the Third Annual Southern California Diversity Recruiting Fair 2021 to recruit faculty, staff, and administrators from underrepresented groups.
Thank you to all students, parents, faculty, coaches and staff who helped make this a safe and enjoyable week of on-campus activities for our student athletes. Our mental and physical well-being are important to maintaining ourselves in this pandemic. We practiced strict health protocols and adhered to guidelines set forth by LA County and Webb's Health Advisory Board. We hope you enjoy these photos! https://www.webb.org/study/school-year-2020-21/
We're excited to welcome local student athletes back to campus this week! The campus is under strict health protocols, but everyone is in great spirits and happy to see one another in person. More photos and updates to come.
