The latest AMA Journal of Ethics focuses on Brain death - in which I wrote an article on mitigating conflicts with religious families. I think its relevant beyond brain death issues. I hope you find it helpful.

On September 5-6, 1972, 11 Israelis were killed in an attack known as the Munich Massacre. During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, members of a Palestinian t...errorist group stormed the Olympic Village, killing 2 members of the Israeli delegation, and taking 9 more hostage. One of the athletes present that day was runner and racewalker Shaul Ladany who, along with 5 others, was able to escape from their apartment. Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1936, Ladany fled to Budapest with his family after their home was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1941. His parents tried to hide him in a monastery, but they were captured and sent from the Budapest ghetto to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944. Ladany spent 6 months there before being rescued on a train to Switzerland. He immigrated to Israel in 1948 and went on to become a world champion, world record holder, two-time Olympian, and a renowned professor of industrial engineering. Today, Ladany is still an active racer, participating in marathons and the 219 Maccabi Games in Budapest. He visits the graves of his Israeli teammates in Tel Aviv every year on September 6th. May the memories of the 11 Israelis killed in the Munich Massacre - David Berger, Ze’ev Friedman, Yossef Gutfreund, Eliezer Halfin, Yossef Romano, Amitzur Shapira, Kehat Shorr, Mark Slavin, Andre Spitzer, Yakov Springer, Moshe Weinberg - forever be a blessing. Episode 4. Daniel interviews a safek Daniel (who is also a Rabbi) and judges him with kaf zchut.
When Holocaust survivor Yehoshuah Hershkowitz died, The New York Times ran this simple, yet poignant obituary headline; "Fed the Poor." This is his remarkable story.

Zoom schedule for the week. Tisha B'Av program next week.
Introducing my latest project: DANS ACROSS THE UNIVERSE! I interview Dans, Daniels, Dannys, Danis, Danielles, and Daniellas on what it's like to have the best n...ame in the universe. How will we blow shofar for patients this year? We normally get about 600 attendees to our High Holiday services in the hospital, but obviously won’t be able t...o gather for that this year. Instead we’ll go directly to patients in need of hearing shofar, and everyone will be wearing a surgical mask - including the shofar! It will still fulfill the mitzvah and hopefully create some smiles as well! See more
Great job organizing this Solly Hess!
Daniel Lobell was in the Jewish Journal! Show some love by reading and commenting on the article!
We are resuming Minyanim this week! We will be davening outdoors and Rabbi Weiner will share the location once you RSVP to him (pls do so ASAP). Below are our minyan protocols at this time: Knesset Israel Outdoor Minyanim Guidelines (Arranged by Rabbi Weiner based on Rabbi Gershon Bess’ guidance and rulings) 1. Who can attend? ...Continue reading
Important update from Rabbi Weiner: As you may have heard, LA County officially permitted limited opening of houses of worship as of today. As per the OU/RCA guidelines, we will be waiting an additional two weeks before we re-open our shul, and therefore anticipate our first Shabbat back to be the Shabbat of June 13th. We will be sharing our detailed safety guidelines before then, and will begin by gathering outdoors only, at a location to be announced. Pls see the weekly shu...l email for special Shavuot learning materials, upcoming learning competition and Shavuot guidelines while Davening alone. Pls also see below important Pico-Robertson rabbinic community announcement: Dear Community Members, As you may know the governor and LA County have released guidelines for our much-anticipated day of returning to shul and minyanim. While we are all excited to return to tefilla btzibbur, and to see many of our friends, we, the Rabbanim of Pico Robertson/Beverly Hills, are very concerned that a rush back to minyanim without proper oversight may undo all the hard work and social distancing of the last ten weeks. It is extremely upsetting to hear reports that there are people who have conducted private minyanim or are planning private minyanim in their backyards. We recognize and appreciate the communal desire to return to davening but we must continue to move forward with guided caution. Although these minyanim may have been formed with the best of intentions of keeping to social distancing, it has been shown that after a short time those restrictions are generally not kept. It is the unified opinion of many medical professionals and halachic authorities that unguided private minyanim create a real scenario of safek sakanah and are therefore strictly forbidden. A decision to make a private minyan can endanger the whole community and no one has a right to make that decision on their own. Although each shul may follow different guidelines for reopening, we, the Rabbanim signed below, agree that there should be no minyan whatsoever that is not conducted under the clear guidance of a shul and a Rav, who will accept responsibility for that minyan. Rabbi Asher Brander Rabbi Moshe Cohen Rabbi Daniel Grama Rabbi Pini Dunner Rabbi Avrohom Hirschman Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky Rabbi Yehuda Moses Rabbi Elazar Muskin Rabbi Dovid Revah Rabbi Yitachak Summers Rabbi Kalman Topp Rabbi Dr Jason Weiner
Rabbi Weiner and Rabbi Magalnic
Update from Rabbi Weiner: In the coming days our State and County governments may begin to permit worship gatherings to occur, within specified parameters and with specific guidelines. We look forward to the opportunity to restart minyanim within these parameters. We are already at work identifying different spaces, both within our Shul and in home backyards, where these minyanim would begin to operate. Any and all minyanim will be organized and run through the Shul, wi...th strict adherence to the government’s guidelines We will however proceed with great caution, care, and deliberateness with regard to timeline and details of implementation. We will continue to follow the Halachik rulings of the poskim of the Orthodox Union and the RCA, including the requirement to wait until we see that the relaxed regulations have not resulted in increasing infection rates. The pre-eminent halachik concern will always be the safety and health of our community.
See you on Zoom!
Join us this week for more learning with Rabbi Weiner: this Tuesday (we’ll discuss and study the Haftarah that some suggest for Yom Haatzmaut) & Thursday (on challenging medical ethics scenarios during Coronavirus pandemic)!

International Angelman Day (IAD) is tomorrow. Observed annually on February 15, IAD raises awareness for Angelman Syndrome a rare, neurogenetic disorder that affects chromosome 15, resulting in intellectual and developmental delay. About 1 in 20,000 people are affected. International Angelman Day is observed on this date in recognition of the 15th chromosome affected in the syndrome, and February is International Rare Disease Month. Join us in raising awareness, for Eli.... www.cureangelman.org www.angelman.org

It was truly an honor to lead the Tehilim (psalms) on behalf of those who are not well at today’s L.A. Siyum HaShas, though I would gladly forgo the honor - and then some - for all of those suffering from illness to indeed have a complete and speedy recovery!
