Have you met Chaz and Mario from @hellacoastal? This past summer while Chaz and Mario were enjoying beers on our patio, a conversation was struck up with Jay, and a friendship blossomed from there. Chaz and Mario were just two guys that turned beer drinking into beer crafting. Beer, a common interest in the Dad’s group they were a part of, turned homebrewing from a hobby into a device to give back to the community. Homebrewing with the Dad’s group helped the PTA raise funds... for the Oakland Public Education Fund. With that idea in mind, they decided to scale up and open their own brewery. Hella Coastal is the first black-owned and brewery in Oakland with a mission to raise awareness and educate the public on the historical, economic, social and health issues concerning our communities. With each beer produced, proceeds will be given back to the community. On behalf of Hella Coastal and our collaboration #breathingconverstaions, we will be giving back to our local community and donating to Youth Spirit Artworks. Get a chance to learn more about Hella Coastal and our collaboration Breathing Conversations. We’ll be chatting beer, brewing, and racial and social inequities with D Neal from @beertalknow this Friday, 1/29 on IG Live. You can join the conversation by 1. Purchasing Breathing Conversations to enjoy and share 2. Following @hellacoastial and @beertalknow 3. Watching our conversation on @beertalknow’s IG Live this Friday, 1/29 at 4PM @jacque_arrieta

Our guest beer menu is often a mix of what we want to drink after a long day of making sour beer (it takes a lot of lager to make sour beer) and what a lot of our guests can’t get enough of (IPA) most of the time skuing IPA heavy. This weekend we are changing it up a bit, adding a few more lagers to the menu, featuring a couple more dark beers and showcasing a guest beer menu that we hope anyone can find a style that they enjoy. Check out what we’re serving up below. 1 @mo...onlightbrewing Death and Our guest beer menu is often a mix of what we want to drink after a long day of making sour beer (it takes a lot of lager to make sour beer) and what a lot of our guests can’t get enough of (IPA) most of the time skuing IPA heavy. Fall has officially taken over our kitchen menu with these seasonal dishes. 1: Roasted Honeynut Squash, pickled honshimeji, chili crunch, tofu cream, cashews, scallion. Chef Notes - Honeynut squash look like a mini butternut squash but are much more concentrated in flavor because they were bred to have less water weight. Sweet, savory, with a hint of spice, this dish (which is also vegan) pairs well with something bold and more full-bodied like BLURRED with Barbera Grape...s as well as something a little more delicate like A Tale of Two Persimmons. 2 : The Romaine Hearts Salad is getting a fall makeover! It’s now served with pickled and shaved beets, celery root, marinated and puffed lentils, comice pears and your choice of blue cheese dressing or red wine vinaigrette. Chef Notes - For this we're using roasted and pickled beets, shaved raw beets, poached celery root, cooked beluga lentils marinated with caramelized onions, puffed lentils, and shaved pears. The different applications of the same ingredient give additional flavor and textural contrast. Try this with Heartache Medication, BLURRED with Chenin Blanc Grapes or with A Tale of Two Persimmons. 3: Creamy Farro Verde, butter poached wild mushrooms, roasted cauliflower, soft cooked egg, pangrattato. Chef Notes - Farro Verde is a type of farro that has a lot more character than other varieties in my opinion. It's got both smoky and grassy flavors which just make it a bit more complex. Mushroom varieties that are being used are chanterelles, oyster, and baby shiitakes. Pangrattato is pretty much any kind of bread crumb topping-in this case we're mixing whole wheat sourdough breadcrumbs with lemon zest, chopped garlic, and parsley to bring some brightness to the dish. A heartier dish I would suggest pairing this with something a little more robust like the BLURRED with Barbera Grapes #Therarebarrel #tastingroomandkitchen #craftkitchen #fallmenu #seasonalmenu #visitberkeley #supportlocal

New Flatbread Special Crafted To Pair with BLURRED with Barebera Grapes! After enjoying a glass or two of BLURRED with Barbera Grapes last week, Chef Charis was inspired to create a new flatbread to pair alongside this wine/beer hybrid. With notes of blackberry, red mulberry, cacao, orange zest, and currants, BLURRED with Barbera Grapes is complex enough to stand alone as well as complement both delicate and robust fall flavors. Utilizing both beef tongue and beef cheek,... Chef prepared these meats over the course of days before introducing them on top of this flatbread special. She first brined the beef tongue and placed in a sous vide for 2 days to make the tongue moist and tender in order to slice. The beef cheeks were placed in the sous vide for 24 hours to also tenderize and shred. Laid on top a bed of mozzarella with roasted radicchio, honeynut squash, caponata, lemon zest, and fried sage, Tongue N Cheek flatbread is a perfect blend of salt, fat, sweet, and bitter. Each ingredient complements each other and pops when enjoyed with a glass of BLURRED with Barbera Grapes. Tongue N Cheek Flatbread will only be available for a limited time. Enjoy with a glass of BLURRED on our patio this weekend and pick up a bottle of BLURRED with Barbera Grapes to enjoy and share at home. #therarebarrel #tastingroomandkitchen #tongueincheek #beeftongue #beefcheeks #flatbread #beerpairing #BLURRED #winebeerhybrid #barbera

With the change of the seasons comes a change to our kitchen menu as Chef Charis introduces new dishes showcasing Fall and Winter produce. Meaning... Brussels Sprouts are back on the menu! New this weekend, we have Roasted Brussels Sprouts tossed in a pimenton vinaigrette, pickled currants, and pomegranate topped with marcona almonds and served with whipped feta. Pimenton (similar too smoked paprika) is used in Spanish cooking, adds a hint of spice to this fall dish, and pairs wonderfully with the warming spice character of Sangria Noir. #therarebarrel #craftkitchen #seasonalmenu #seasonalproduce #brusselsprouts #pimenton #sangrianior #sangria

Chef Charis takes pride in making pretty much everything in-house and this flatbread isn’t any different. The pastrami is brined for 10 days before being coated with crushed coriander and peppercorns and then smoked. Topped with house-made sauerkraut, caramelized onions, swiss-mozzarella blend, Russian dressing, and everything powder, this flatbread is reminiscent of a Reuben sandwich on rye bread. Try it this weekend on the patio with a glass of Heartache Medication or a can of Sangria Noir. #therarebarrel #craftkitchen #pastrami #flatbread #beerpairing #visitberkeley #eatlocal
