The Pegasus School 01.11.2020

Today’s Tuesday Teacher Feature is Mrs. Lisa Calvin! When asked about a challenge she has had this year, as well as a solution, she says, A challenge I have had to work through this school year is how to perform laboratory experiments while social distancing, as well as engaging our distance learners. In a normal school year, laboratory experiments are done in groups of two so that students can support one another. This year, students are learning to work independe...ntly. On lab days, half the students work on a lab experiment, while the other half completes classwork. I engage distance learners by having them work with a lab partner who is in class performing the lab. We have an iPad that can be rolled around the classroom and placed close to the experiment/glassware, so students at home can see what is occurring in the experiment. It makes for a challenging day to run two different lessons simultaneously, but my students have been amazing; they are learning to be flexible and are willing to try new things as I figure out new methods of teaching. I am incredibly grateful for my students it is a joy to teach them!" Mrs. Calvin is the eighth-grade science teacher. She joined Pegasus in 2012 from Mater Dei High School, where she taught chemistry, advanced earth science and physical science. While in college, Mrs. Calvin often tutored students in multiple math and science courses, which is where she found her passion for helping students learn. She started her career as a geologist at an environmental firm, cleaning up contaminated groundwater and soil. Mrs. Calvin holds a B.S. in Geology from California State University, Long Beach, an M.A. in Education and a single subject teaching credential from National University. She is affiliated with the American Chemical Society, National Science Teachers Association, California Science Teachers Association and The Geological Society of America. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, traveling and spending time with her family. #wearepegasus #pegasustuesdayteacherfeature See more

Today’s Tuesday Teacher Feature is Mrs. Remy Carl! Mrs. Carl expresses her gratitude for our added childcare on campus: I am extremely appreciative of the remarkable offer Pegasus extended to its faculty and staff in providing childcare for my children. I am grateful that my children will be well taken care of during this unsettling time. When times get tough, I gain encouragement from the gestures offered by my community. With my children taken care of, I am empowe...red to focus solely on my students while I teach. Additionally, I hope to support my colleagues with the added energy gained by having my children cared for. Remy joined Pegasus in 2010 as a math teacher in the Middle School before transitioning to her new role of Lower School Math Specialist in 2018. Prior to teaching at Pegasus, she taught at a middle school, a continuation school, and at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, where she was the head varsity rowing coach. Remy holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley (Go Bears!), as well as an M.A. in Education and a Single Subject Math Credential from Claremont Graduate University with Honors as the Peter Lincoln Fellowship Award Recipient. Remy is also the mother to Lincoln ('30), Addison, and Jameson. She enjoys camping, eating, and spending time with her family. #wearepegasus #pegasustuesdayteacherfeature

Your gift to the Annual Fund supports GREAT PEOPLE! Every year, Pegasus provides a variety of on-campus professional development offerings, and every employee is encouraged to seek opportunities off campus as well. This might be a workshop with a local school or district, a national conference such as Learning & the Brain; we've even sent a Spanish teacher to an institute in Madrid. Thank you for providing invaluable learning opportunities to our faculty and staff! #pegasusannualfund

Today’s Tuesday Teacher Feature is Ms. Ivette Hermann! Ms. Hermann is doing some cool things in art to engage all her students. She says, This is such a powerful and momentous year to be an educator! Challenged by teaching an inherently visual mode of expression in a remote and hybrid setting has offered its share of complications. However, a multitude of opportunities to rethink and sharpen my approach have also been presented. I have been urged to create and recreate c...urricula that do not rely as heavily on special media and materials, while encouraging our young artists to be innovative, and resourceful. This is exemplified in my 3D Art Elective in which students created three dimensional sculptures inspired by an onomatopoeia of their choosing. Materials were simply cardboard scraps, glue, tape and scissors. Also, the significance of current events in Art and music has become even more of a focal point in what I share with the students as I push them to investigate their world and try to understand the contexts of the artwork we explore in class. This sees the students creating more work that involves introspection and an emphasis on words. Ms. Hermann brings nearly 10 years of teaching experience to Pegasus. She has worked across all grade levels, including first and second grades, middle and high school. Ms. Hermann has also worked with children (ages 512) at Mission: Renaissance Fine Art Classes and with adults at the National Institute of Arts & Disabilities where she was a curatorial assistant and teaching artist. She obtained a B.A. in Fine Art, with an emphasis in oil painting from the University of California, San Diego. Her third year at UCSD was spent in Barcelona studying Art History and Spanish Film at the University of Barcelona (by day), and painting at the Real Círculo Artístico de Barcelona (by night).

Mrs. Carin Meister is today's "Tuesday Teacher Feature"! Mrs. Meister shares some insight on how she made our Battle of the Books program work this year: "Battle of the Books is such a gratifying program not only because it exposes students to a diverse range of protagonists and genres, but because it strengthens relationships between teachers and students. Our book discussions are led by teachers all over campus: from middle and lower school to administration and retired ...teachers. Preserving our teacher-led discussions was imperative when reenvisioning the program due to COVID restrictions. This year, our teachers will travel from cohort to cohort in 4th and 5th grades on a daily basis to engage students in thoughtful conversations about literature. It's a testament to our teachers' dedication that they would give up such valuable time for the good of our 4th and 5th grade readers. I am so grateful to have such wonderful colleagues." Mrs. Meister has been the school's librarian since 2007. Prior to joining the Pegasus community, she taught English at Mayfair High School for six years. Before becoming a teacher, she worked at UCLA’s University Research Library in the Special Collections department. She earned a B.A. in American Literature and Culture from UCLA and a teaching credential in English from CSULB. Mrs. Meister is a member of the American Library Association, American Association of School Librarians, and the California School Library Association. Her personal interests include reading historical and realistic fiction, traveling, and spending time with her family her husband and three daughters: Cate (‘18), Reese (‘20), and Sloane (‘26).
