"Planning a wedding in / around 2020 feels like you went out for a walk to brunch, and ended up realizing that you'd *actually* signed up for a 92 mile ultra-marathon ... and you're only at mile 8 and you hate running" me, on a call with a new client last night. About sums up my feelings about this year. Equal parts infuriating, devastating, exhausting, and confusing, WITH a huge amount of incredible surprises, silver linings seriously ... SO MUCH MAGIC. ... And it's still only the beginning of December! (The 20 years of 2020 is right! Mind. Blown.) So for all of those couples who are planning weddings, or planning what feels like the 28945th version of your wedding, I can speak for myself and on behalf the entire wedding industry: I feel you. Hear you. I'm sending you so many hugs. It's hard, and frustrating, but truly ... your wedding day will come (it really will) and it will be magical. But please get in all the hugs, tacos, sweatpants and whatever else feels good because good riddancewhat a wild ride this year has been! Your people. My people. Our people. Community. Family. This image reminds me of the RADIANCE that I get to witness on wedding days. These two, @citysage and @teamwoodnote are thick as thieves in friendship, business, and are definitely support systems in their lives together. Brides often ask me how many is appropriate in a bridal party? And we’ve seen from zero, to one, to siblings only, to fourteen or more. I always say - let your gut and intuition guide you,... and there are often so many ways that your *people* (which could include animals, or anything for that matter!) can be included on your wedding day that the rules, or should really don’t apply. I want to you to be surrounded by this kind of joy and love on your wedding day - that’s what I stand for. And for those who are still pre- or post- wedding day, I love these images equally as much as they remind us of the moments and people that exist in our life that are *our* community. Our people. Which includes you, my darlings. YOU are part of my people, and while it’s week late for Valentine’s day, I kinda like to celebrate that all year long. So thank you for being a part of my world. Different seasons, aka going with the flow. (Also vacation requests!) Have you ever noticed that some things come with ease, and sh*t gets accomplished, effortlessly and speedy? And the counter weight experience when no one answers their emails, your friend productivity ghosted the party and despite your best intentions, it's like nothing is on your side? I've been thinking about this - both as a woman (monthly cycles are real and woah), as a person, as an entrepreneur,... as a wedding planner, and as a service provider. There are times of rest, and times of 100-mile-an-hour fun/let's gooo zone. With my clients, we see it with our monthly schedules and task list (which we set out at the beginning of our process), I see it with myself pre and post wedding weeks, and I see it as a woman and a person when my health just *demands* that I turn the speed down. I mean, we are literally in winter right now here in North America - the season of taxes, bookkeeping, proposals, new client onboarding, and prepping for busy season. Everything in my body wants to GO and yet, there are so many things telling me to slow down, not quit yet. Which brings me to my real question: vacation. Down time. Creative recharge to fill the batteries back up. I have the luxury of having some space during travel weeks in the next couple of months and I'm stumped on where I want to invest both my time, money, and spirit. Beautiful design, good food, and preferably some sun are my requirements so my dear friends - what/where would you recommend? Oh hi there! I'm not sure I've ever done one of these introduction posts, but it's a new year and there's a bunch of new peeps in the crowd, so let's jump in, shall we? I'm Liz, founder, designer, flower order-er, head boss lady all the things. ... I started The Nouveau Romantics over 8 years ago focusing on event design, florals, and paper goods, and expanded into full planning and design less than two years later. Since then, we’ve travelled all across the USA creating weddings for some pretty stellar clients (who are now mostly friends), and we have a knack for backyard / private property / ranch / outdoor weddings. It’s true, I can rattle off power and bathroom requirements in my sleep, while chasing the Fedex truck down the highway (and driving very safely). Personally? I live most of the year in LA, but am on a plane more often than not to Austin, NYC, and a beach as often as I can. My 95 lb lab, Gus, is an unofficial mayor Silverlake, and the best sidekick a girl can ask for. I’m the middle child, a Capricorn of all Capricorns, and an INFP - which makes so much sense for those that know me. I love excel documents as much as I love waving my hands and getting excited about hair brained design ideas. After graduating architecture school, I worked at a big firm in NYC for 4 years, then started the PhD program in Architectural History at UT in Austin before jumping ship full time in TNR very quickly. (I was blogging in the back of my class instead of listening to the lecture and the professor totally called me on it.) That being said, designing a house is pretty much the same as designing a wedding or event, and the latter keeps all the things I love the most, with a much shorter timeframe. A big believer that the power of a team makes all the difference, I’m most proud of the staff and vendors that we’ve been able to work with and continue to this day. Our crew just finished up an epic week long install for the most wonderful wedding weekend for Cristina and Collin. They are two of the most down to earth and wonderful human beings that made this all worth it. This may have been our first stop in Dallas, but I doubt it will be the last. Packing up and coordinating all the load-out and then we’re heading back to our respective corners of the country. Fun fact: our schedule is all over the country, every year, and I actually love how nimble and quick we are to set up shop.) This was pre-load in for their rehearsal dinner at @theadolphushotel in their 19th floor ballroom. This was the most stunning blank canvas. Keep tabs for more sneak peeks this week! (Annnnd I rhyme too.)

Hola! Well that was quite the siesta, which is less like the relaxing siesta and the life rockets out into space and I just try to hang onto my hat, pants, and sanity. Suffice to say, I don't just feel, but KNOW 2019 is going to be one heck of a year (our client roster is AMAZING!) But let’s return to Part II of the Flowers: Behind the Scenes, shall we? We left off on Thursday, prepping for Friday and getting all the florals up to perfect form.... 8. Friday: this is our main assembly day! Depending on the scope, we’ve turned out tiny weddings to 75 centerpieces + 17 bouquets + more. We make sure to have sharp clippers, good music, and usually tacos or healthy food + gluten free cake on hand. And caffeine. 8b. Once we’re finished arranging, we start the flower Tetris, which involves packing each arrangement gingerly for whatever transport is necessary. We say a prayer that everything stays together for another 24 hours and get some rest. 9.The big event day. I like to start ours early, mostly because things inevitably go wrong, and it allows us that little bit of time when it’s all complete to sit back and high give (and instagram!) 9b. We arrive, unpack all the florals, re-water, re-fluff, and if we’re really good - set directly on the pre-set tables. Fun fact: having the chairs and any votives *not* placed yet makes our job a lot easier. Otherwise it’s team Move-A-Chair, all day long. 10. We then style any candles, re-arrange glassware, place the centerpieces and get moving on the ceremony. The ceremony and any installation pieces usually have specific team members assigned to them for certain time frames or as needed. We staff our teams based on complexity and our load in time, and then schedule out the team and tasks as needed. 10b.I like to plan our finish time at least an hour to two (ideally) before the wedding even starts, so that guests aren’t walking in and thinking that our speedy pace is anything to worry about. Our goal is that anyone coming in as a guest will just assume that all of these pieces have, ahem, *always* been there, and we’re hidden away before the action even starts! 11.ACTION TIME! The big show. We’re head off before guests arrive, or hide away mostly to get final shots of everything 12. Then, when everything is finished . We come back at 11pm, 1am, 3 am or whatever it takes to break it all down. The physicality of this job is one of the biggest challenges, and comfortable shoes and an able body are our lifelines. That being said, the opportunity to work with our hands and create beauty is pretty much second to none. It’s both meditative and an ultimate act of creativity - and shhhh - I actually *love* that our work only lasts a certain amount to time. To me that is a perfect reminder that all things are fleeting and I/we can only experience the moment that is in front of us. There you have it! What did you think? There are a ton of things that have changed in my life over the last decade or so moved from NYC to Austin to LA, adopted my oversized lab/Great Dane sidekick Gus and finally discovered avocados (it’s true. Canada, growing up, just wasn’t peak avocado land!). Friends of mine have come and gone, but one thing remains. Our relationship can be demanding, dramatic and at times on the high maintenance side. But I honestly can’t remember the days before I don’t know how I found my way around LA it’s my phone. Yes, I’m being completely honest. My sleep tracking (#nerdalert), instagramming, schedule-keeping treasure, which I occasionally use to FaceTime my nephews, as a modem, and a mirror. You’ve navigated backroads and missed directions with me, and for that I am eternally grateful. I love you, my little iPhone buddy. Who’s with me?

It’s Wednesday, humpday, halfway through the week - right now seemed as good a time as any for a little behind-the-scenes. Here’s a glimpse into my day’s to-do list, which, while these are *task-like*, each of their upsides gives me an extra pep in my step! (Silver lining anyone?) Finalizing the art for the LA studio that is getting photographed next week. I’m so excited to finally have the space Finished Finished (you know, when it’s not 85% done, but truly done? And clean...? And primped with plants, etc? You know what I’m talking about!) Sending off a new client contract so that we can get down to some road trips for a fall 2019 wedding with a fabulous family that I cannot wait to dig in and spend more time with! Dropping off some flowers for a friend’s venue opening party! Whoop whoop! They’re my fav color palette of taupe, green, grasses, creamy deliciousness and a couple of those Cafe Au Last dahlias right up there! What’s some of that good stuff on your list today?

October 4th marks one of the most sacred days: It’s National Taco Day! How will ya’ll be celebrating? Let’s TACO ‘bout it. (Too easy, right?) Me? I have plans to completely rationalize eating tacos allll day long, then find a way to eat a taco for dessert? Dessert tacos - is that a thing? Can we make it a thing? I’d definitely be down. Chances are, I’ll also wish that I could sport this killer taco hat, just like The Flash Dance, because really - what’s better than this?... Now you. What are you planning for THE BEST HOLIDAY THERE IS!?? (Not even remotely joking. My staff knows that my taco habit is way beyond healthy, but eh? It’s a vice that I’m not ashamed of!)

My favorite quote comes from my dad that I heard over and over again while growing up: Do what you love, and the money will come. It reminds me to follow my nose and curiosity and do what I love, knowing that I will be taken care of when I’m aligned to my personal joy, purpose, and how I can contribute to the world. ... It also reminds me to not get caught up in the details of the world, and that at the end of the day - being proud of the work I create will pay dividends that go well beyond what is in my bank account. Time flies, doesn’t it? Since I started this business almost 8 years ago, we have traveled to create magical weddings all across the USA, worked with/at Martha Stewart’s NYC house (!!!), and driven thousands of miles in U-Hauls. But as life, times, and seasons change, I’m proud to say some things in my business have remained the same. Today, as always, we get to privilege of meeting and being a part of so many families and their children's weddings. Of course there’s been long days, hard work, and tens of thousands of emails, but I could never keep up that kind of consistency without the amazing support of clients like YOU! What things can’t YOU live without? There are a few things I’m pretty sure I just couldn’t live without: in the morning coffee/journal/gym at my local Intelligentsia - Silver Lake, and on the weekend it’s all about my outdoor workout, hikes with the pup, and afternoon naps (#selfcaresunday is real y’all!) In my work, though, these three things are dispensable: google docs for all of our multi-tabbed client headquarters, moleskin journals x 3 for all the lists, and a killer S...potify playlist to keep me inner dance queen focused and on task. "Do You", they say. All the advice columns, online stories, and even in-person guidance is a push-pull that encourages you to embrace and celebrate the things that make you (and your partner) unique, one-of-a-kind, lovable human being. There may be expectations of how weddings "should be" but your wedding is literally (!!!) the one day that you can throw that to the wind (if you want!) and embrace the small parts of your personality that makes your friends and family c...rack up, shake their head with a wide smile and say, "that's so [insert your name]." Example: Kelsey, our bride, is an animal lover. Her father's speech actually included the line "who in the world has a petting zoo at their wedding? Well, Kelsey does!" And the smile and loving head shake said it all. The joy on her face is palpable. So do you. An Easy Strategy for Gorgeous Invitations Get ready. It's earth shattering. Ready?... Ready? Simplicity is a classic, and colored envelopes + different paper texture and styles are your shoe-in for a win. Truly. I'm a broken record with our clients: pick the couple of focal points - like ribbon it's tied with, or a front emblem design that is the first thing that your guests see when they open the envelope, or a variety of paper types includes vellum printed with a pattern. You can have a simple white-paper-black-ink design, and wrap it / assemble it in the simplest way for a huge impact. We employ this with each of our clients and get resounding feedback each time (even when we use @minted invitations!) And colored envelopes are my JAM! Why pick white when you have the entire rainbow? This gorgeous suite designed by @epochdes is a perfect example of a simple neutral color palette, printed with vellum and a soft grey vellum that is the right mix of elegant, natural, and classic. Opposites Attract, or, "Even Pizza Parties Deserve a Gorgeous Table". Imagine how you would feel if you want to a fancy multi-course dinner and they served your childhood favourite - be it PB&J on buttered bread, corn dogs, or mini rootbeer floats as a mid-meal course. Or if you rolled up to a black tie event and there were full sized bibs, and the entire "Harry Potter" style table was chock full of a clambake or a Medieval Times style feast with "use only your hands"?... Practicalities aside, that element of surprise, delight, and childhood silliness at something that seems a little out of place gives our expectations a little nudge, and creates an air of fun. It elevates your guest's experience, creates shared community, not to mention that it allows you to customize and share the things that resonate and matter with you to your guests. What's not to love about that? I'm a big fan of having fun, embracing a little sillyness, and food is an easy and perfect place to serve up some whimsy. This image by Monica Wang is from an Anne Sage designed + styled shoot (we did the )that shows how a simple gorgeous table would be the perfect setting for ... a pizza party. Why not? I think this is a great jumping off point for an elegant wedding in Italy, where I could imagine a loving grandma is serving up a family-guarded secret tomato sauce alongside freshly-made mozzarella. Yes please! Have fun with things, and play up the natural opposites of your venue, food, or decor. The act of opposing forces is where things get a little spicy! (Same with relationships, right?) What's your childhood fav food that you'd love to be surprised with or share with your people? (I'm definitely a peanut butter and BUTTER on white bread. Not sorry about that one bit.)

Where are you looking for inspiration? Part of our process, and something that I am an outspoken advocate for is: look beyond wedding blogs and/or wedding imagery for inspiration while dreaming, planning & designing your wedding. Do you have a favorite painting or part of your home, or something that the two of you have purchased together or has some kind of meaning? ... We invite our clients to look to their favorite restaurants, clothing, interiors brands, hotels, or anything in general - and pull the color stories, textures, and style into the initial part of designing the overall feel of their weddings. Pulling in the places, things, or experiences (it could even be a picture of the two of you in your favorite vacation spot!) allows you to build the visual / color language that has a deeper meaning, and - this is a personal opinion - will also bring in the same emotions and reaction that you have to the starting point. Often it's a feeling of warmth, joy, and ease which adds a richness that is subtle, yet powerful. This image is an example - the colors of the glass are soothing, calming, with a textured white background and that subtle black rim brings a crispness to the overall composition. These are the elements and qualities that I'd build into the linens, paper goods, etc. I'd love to hear about what pieces / places / brands resonate with you - how do they make you feel? Our September and October's are almost always busy, and it's fully of anniversaries and memories of the couples and families that we've worked with. It's truly a treat for us to look back and remember all that went into creating each of these stories for our couples. A highlight of my job is the relationship and time we get to spend with each of our clients. Kristina Christiansen and Barrett were an effortless and natural working relationship from the start. I met them i...n a dark hotel sitting room in the West Village one fall (or was it winter?) night. Immediately, I was struck by Barrett's easy demeanor, sophisticated style, and how much trust and warmth he emanated to everyone, especially Kristina. The bride, well, we're cut from the same cloth. Our love of animals, attention to detail, and a classic style with a romantic and natural twist -- I always spot my tribe from a mile away, and she was an absolute delight to work with. Their wedding continues to be one of our highlights, and even if it hasn't been held at Aunt Martha's (*that Martha*) house, I have complete confidence that it would still be in our top favs. Happy Anniversary you two - and I know you're enjoying your new home + haven in Connecticut. I'll live vicariously through your quality horse time, adventures in the gorgeous outdoors, and keep me up to date with all the best eating spots. How do you go about captioning this? Last week @harpersbazaarus released their list of "Best Planners in the World" list. I almost skipped right over it, with to-do lists and client meetings in Texas to attend to. What a perfect metaphor. I can only speak for myself, but this business and my day-to-day life is often to busy that I *almost* skipped right over an honor that, let's be real, is humbling and a little mind boggling. I'm so glad I stopped to take it in, look... around me, and well, this post is the antidote to that "running a million miles an hour" habit. More importantly though, these words ring true: This list represents colleagues and friends, with many as those that have paved the way to allow me to stand where I am today, and to whom I respect tremendously. Each of these companies creativity, commitment to their clients and their craft, and HEART in the pursuit of excellence make this time in the events industry a phenomenal place to be. The reality of our day to day is a tireless devotion to our clients, our craft, our creativity, and just putting in the work to create beauty and magic so that we witness the smiles and joy on the faces we serve. These moments, for me, are a reminder, to poke my head out of my cave for a moment and look around. To say I love this color combination would be a vast understatement. That rich lemon is the perfect shade of vibrant, yet warm and just look - you never know where you can grab inspiration from. Is there an object or piece of clothing whose pattern of color combination you love? Or your favorite building, hotel or interior?
