It has been scientifically-proven that exercise improves mental health in many ways. The physical activity we engage in during exercise leads our brain to make certain changes and release certain chemicals that lift up our mood, reduce our stress, and improve cognitive functions including concentration. What type of exercise makes you feel your best? Comment below!... #exercise #mentalhealthtip #mentalhealth #neuropsychologist #phd #theneuroscene

1 Sensory Memory: Information first enters through your 5 senses - seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching. This information only lasts in your sensory memory for about 1-2 seconds since you have SO much information flooding your senses. You must first pay attention to the information, and then decide if it's something you'd like to remember. For example, if someone tells you that their phone number is 765-1776, it registers on your senses for just a second or two. I...f you don’t pay attention to it, you will forget it quickly. 2 Once you pay attention to the information, it enters your Short-Term Memory. Your Short-Term Memory is like a temporary holding tank for information. It involves keeping information in your mind, like a phone number, by repeating it over and over again. 3 Long-Term Memory is for storing information permanently. How do we do that? One of the most powerful ways of storing information permanently is by making the information meaningful to you. Scroll back up to that phone number I showed you earlier. Visualize the phone number in your mind. Can you make that number meaningful? 765 is just like counting backwards. How about 1776? Can you associate that number with anything you know or is meaningful to you? Now that you have made that phone number meaningful, you are more likely to remember it! 1. Validate your feelings to recognize that the feeling of anxiety is there and that it may be there to help you. Denying the experience of anxiety will make it pop up even stronger. A recent study assessing pregnant women who were worried about the zika virus found that when the women suppressed their feelings, their fears became more intense. 2.Narrow the focus. Anxiety is generally not connected with a specific problem. This makes us feel that there’s a threat all... around us, making us increasingly worried about everything! So, ask yourself: Is this my problem? Is this something that I’m responsible for and matters to me? If the answer is Yes, then ask yourself: Is it within my sphere of control? Do I have the control to do something about it? 3.Suspend conclusion. Nobody can ever really know if an outcome will be good or bad. Since you don’t know, do not jump to a conclusion. Instead, stay curious, and ask yourself: What is important here? Replacing anxiety with curiosity will help you understand your anxiety in a deeper way. 4.Shrink the feeling. Anxiety can often feel like a very dark cloud hovering over your head. Instead of wishing for it to go away, try to imagine it getting a little bit lighter, a little bit smaller, and a little bit further away from you. Take some perspective. Take a step back so that you can hear the message and not just the noise. How? Breathe, go for a walk, drink water, laugh, smell flowers 5.Clean up the clutter. Literally! Both physical and mental chaos make it harder for us to think. It becomes more difficult for us to figure out what is really important in the situation and what we should be paying attention do. Research found that when someone is in a cluttered environment, their automatic processing becomes distracted by the clutter. In other words, they had trouble sorting out what was important to them, which increased their sense of anxiety! This was particularly true for women. Let us know in the commentsabout what your thoughts are on these 5 strategies! #emotionalintelligence #anxiety#neuropsychology #neuroscience #psychology #brain #theneuroscene

People are right-brained or left-brained: False! People use both hemispheres of their brain for all cognitive functions. It is absolutely true that some brain functions occur in one or the other side of the brain. But brain studies have shown that people do not tend to have a stronger right- or left-sided brain network. We only have five senses: False! We all know our 5 basic senses, but we have so many more ways of sensing the world and our place in it besides using th...ose 5! Some of our other senses include: Proprioception (sense of how our bodies are positioned in space), Nociception (sense of pain), Equilibrioception (sense of balance), Thermoception (sense of heat), Chronoception (sense of the passage of time), and Interoception (sense of your internal needs like hunger and thirst). We only use 10% of our brains: False! Brain scans have shown that no matter what you are doing (talking, walking, listening to music...), almost all brain regions are constantly active. Even people with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease still use more than 10% of their brains. You must speak a language well before learning another: False! In fact, young children who learn two languages, even at the same time, gain better generalized knowledge of language structure as a whole.
